I lasted longer

So Grandma last another hour last night and went to bed.

I'm the first one up well because I didn't sleep. I'm making a breakfast casserole and getting things ready for the game tonight.

We're having a great time having her here but she did say one thing I did care for but I didn't say anything

She asked my buddy how he was doing. After my buddy updated her Joel said he was thinking about starting therapy

She said Nieto don't be silly you don't need to do that. You have a good life, your happy. Your fine.

He said yeah abuela, your right.

She then changed the subject and started asking about the game tonight.

I really hate that she said that to him. But I wasn't going to say something in front of her. My buddy didn't either. I just don't know why she would say that to him.

Older generation are not comfortable with therapy and see it is something for the weak or crazy. We know better, you know better, your buddy knows better.
She is just trying to protect him in her mind. But is doing the opposite.
You did well by not opposing her, but do what you think is right.

@AoNoSora I of course want him to go to therapy if he feels he needs it. I go twice a week right now. I just hope her saying that doesn't keep him from going. She raised him, so what she thinks is very important to him .
@Cigarguy
Oh my god.
Of course he needs it if he thinks he does.
I hope you can convince him that it s just her not understanding the gravity of the situation.
None of my family knows I see a psychiatrist and take meds, I know they'd be strongly against it. But I know what is right for my health.

@AoNoSora that's the odd part, she knows I see one, she knows my buddy is in a treatment program and even the kids see a counselor. And she's ok with that but tells him he's fine.

I'm sorry you're family doesn't support you but I'm glad you are doing what is best for you
@Cigarguy perhaps she doesn't accept the one she raised to have an issue. It is frequent in older generation. Would think it is the case for her?

And thank you for your empathy.
Cigarguy · M
@AoNoSora yeah I think you are right. She doesn't know we go to a support group for eating disorders either. He's never told her. She thinks we meet at the cigar lounge we both like to go to
@Cigarguy
Right.
Sometimes it is okay to keep things from people who don't understand.
It is alright.
But you should make it clear to him that her opinion doesn't mean she is right and that you respect her but you don't have to live up to her every expectations. His health matters more than any opinion.

@AoNoSora yes if he feels he needs to talk to someone I'm all for it. It's been a hard year for him, our oldest boy got really sick, than I was in the hospital for a while, he got really sick too. We moved. Just a lot of stuff. So if he needs help I'm going to encourage him to get it
@Cigarguy
Yeah you should encourage him.
You are being a great partner
Don't let her influence him... mental health matters a lot.
Cigarguy · M
@AoNoSora I different will. I think he's struggling with his eating disorder again.
@Cigarguy That's why you need to encourage him and be there for him. Therapy is going to help and all of you know that. Don't let him think about it too much. Explain that it is just her point of you. He trusts you and trusts your judgement.
Cigarguy · M
@AoNoSora I will he already knows I'll support him if he decides to go.
@Cigarguy You should be proud of yourself.
We are all proud of you all.
Keep going strong. He is going to get better with your support.
Cigarguy · M
@AoNoSora thank you that is so kind of you to say. He does it for me so if course I'll be there for him and support him
@Cigarguy I know. I wish you the best. 🥰
