The surprising changes that occur from counselling training

1. Saving others.
I no longer try to save people or "help" anyone, which sounds counter-intuitive, I learned that I can't save or truly help anyone by intervening, they can only help themselves. Instead I offer support if it's wanted, and I take that support very seriously.

2. Conversation.
I can tell when someone is listening and when someone is waiting to talk, Im more aware of myself in that regard and I know how to actively listen. I'm aware of how much it means to actually give someone your time, and as a result I can connect better with others.

3. Agendas.
I'm more aware of my reasons for speaking, did I share that for connection or to create an ideal image of myself?. If I share this thing I'm proud of does this further the conversation or does it just make it about myself?. Its surprising how much of our interactions are about our own agendas, rather than what's happening in front of us, and it allows me to step outside of myself.

4. Personal examination.
I found out a lot about myself that I wouldn't have otherwise, the reasons for certain behaviours, wants, needs, why they are the way they are, and I'm more honest and at peace with those discoveries.
