On the fourth day of Christmas, is it four calling birds or four colly birds?

I've seen both versions printed. I always sang "calling birds" when I was little. What is a colly bird anyway?

A colly bird is simply a blackbird.

@Mustermann I've never heard of it before, except in some versions of the Christmas song.

@Crazychick From Wikipedia: "The 1780 version has "four colly birds"—colly being a regional English expression for "coal-black" (the name of the collie dog breed may come from this word). A colly bird is a common blackbird."

@Mustermann Are we talking about a bird or a dog? Lol :)

@Crazychick Contrary to common belief a collie dog is not the same thing as a common blackbird. ;-)

@Mustermann I thought they didn't look the same. Still, they are both nice, aren't they?

@Crazychick Indeed they are!

@Crazychick You can tell by the number of legs (dog or bird)
