Anyone know anything about Updraft Carburetors?

Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
The only thing I know about carburetors is that they stopped installing them in cars nearly 35 years ago.

@Barefooter25 But they are still used on almost all small engines such as you find on lawn mowers and snow blowers and rototillers etc.

@HumanEarth I always loved the four-barrel carburetor and the slightest of pauses as it opened up just before accelerating.

Fuel injected is not the same.😠

I hate EFI Fuel Injection the most. Mechanical Fuel Injection is not that bad, It's actually kinda easy. It's when they started adding computers to stuff that ruined the fun of working of on it

No clue hun but I'm here nevertheless 😅
I might learn something from the comments

I'm just being a Little stinker today, in other words I'm being a brat

😁😁😁

very simple machines. You don't need a mechanic's degree to fix them.
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
I love these things from the 1960s
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@HumanEarth The oldest one I saw came from an engine from the 20s. I have spent a lot of time inside of them. Great fun cleaning and setting it so the engine runs smoothly with the right mixture.

Nope. I can build a house and barn, but the mechanical side of life has never connected with me.

How may I help you middle earth ?

I am a retired automotive and diesel mechanic!

@daddybloke If that's not the problem, what else do you think I should look at?
daddybloke · 46-50, M
@HumanEarth possibly diaphragm seal
DDaverde · 56-60, M
@daddybloke ok gotcha
You may half to make a replacement one..
DDaverde · 56-60, M
@HumanEarth good stuff simple up until the early 70s Before catalytic converters and computer controls ..

Think they matted with the Minneapolis Moline 445 and Jet Star and had a baby

and had mutant for a kid

@HumanEarth Can confirm... that does look like a mutant...
jackson55 · M
Looks like something off a Model A Ford ?
jackson55 · M
@HumanEarth Probably the same one that was installed on Ford 8N and 9N tractors.
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
@jackson55 This Carb is way too big for them, Similar style, but for the 8Nand 9N they were twice as small
jackson55 · M
@HumanEarth They were a controlled leak never the Less
daddybloke · 46-50, M
i know of down and sidedrift never really heard of up ? sorry
MethDozer · M
@daddybloke They were used on very old cars and vehicles( pre-40s mostly) and little bit later still on some farm equipment.
By the 50s they were pretty much archaic and obsolete in all applications. Rarely used by then and after except in very niche applications.
They really only made sense with unpressurized fuel systems and F head (intake over exhaust) engine designs. Once those two concepts faded the updraft carb really had no advantage
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
@MethDozer But they are use today like in small machines.... like lawn mowers
MethDozer · M
@HumanEarth I can't think of one major manufacturer that was using updrafts on even lawnmowers after maybe the 70s, early 80s tops. They all switched to side drafts. Not saying there were none, but they were rare.

They certainly aren't used after the switch from flathead to OHV
MethDozer · M
Sure, what about them?
