There was a very interesting book by Al Alvarez about suicide called "The Savage God" - distinguishing between those who really intend to succeed and those who are crying for help. I can think of at least one from each category from among my own friends.
I cannot begin to understand how desperate one has to be and the amount of courage one must have to take the step between thinking of suicide and actually crossing that point of no return.
