Does anyone have any advice on how to overcome Hell anxiety/OCD?

For context, I'm not a religious person, but I do 100% believe in a God/higher power and an afterlife of some sort, most definitely.

Also, I cannot afford therapy right now, so any advice would be appreciated.

I find myself in constant fear of an eternal Hell, to the point where my brain cannot let it go, even when I try to distract myself by talking to family, playing games, going shopping, etc. The fear does not leave me, I never have peace of mind and I've been feeling like this for months.

Now I know what happens after death is unknown and no one knows for sure, and I used to be content with that. I was always comfortable with death and nonchalant about it. Even going as far as to say that I didn't fear death at all. (And damn, do I miss that feeling!) Because there was no evidence of hell.

That was until I've read things about Hellish NDEs. Now, I know there are Christians out there who fabricate some of these stories to get people to convert out of fear, but I've read about them on reddit, without the person having an agenda, they were just sharing their experience. And I know that the person can usually get out of it and that they usually turn positive, but those people weren't fully dead. Who knows what happens when they don't come back.

I've even read scarier things on reddit, about hellish deathbed visions, where people see demons and the devil and complain that they're burning and have a terrified look in their eyes. These scare me more than the NDEs and only tells me that there's evidence of a Hell and that I should live in fear.

I want to believe that these are hallucinations, but it's hard to, especially when I believe that the positive ones are real and that people's passed loved ones do come get them when they're on their death bed.

So, has anyone else dealt with this theme of anxiety/OCD and if so, how did you overcome it? I hate feeling and living like this. I just want to be comfortable with the unknown again and have my peace of mind back.

Yes, you absolutely can overcome Hell anxiety. This comment will be long, but if you read through all of it and really process it, understand it all and believe in it, then you will overcome that Hell Anxiety, so please stick with me. This is how: so, the Bible states that once you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, meaning once you place all of your trust in Him alone and believe that Christ died, was buried and rose from the grave as a payment for your sin, you are saved and eternally secured and no matter what, you will never go to Hell. The Bible teaches once saved always saved. Once you get saved and realize this Biblical truth, there is no reason to have Hell anxiety anymore. I highly suggest that you don't put much stock in NDE's, as they are merely the experiences of man and they are all different and contradictory. Some are completely made up and others are deceptions from Satan. Satan can and does deceive through visions, signs and wonders. These people who supposedly went to Heaven and Hell are always adding to God's word and their experiences do not match the scriptures. Every testimony I have ever heard from these people who falsely claimed to have gone to Heaven and Hell are always preaching a false, works based Gospel, ultimately getting man to trust in himself and his own works to get into Heaven. So of course Satan is behind these experiences and visions because he wants to get as many people to go to Hell with him as possible. The Bible says we are not saved by our own works, but that we are saved by the finished work of Jesus Christ. The Bible says that Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). We are not co-authors. We are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

The way to overcome your Hell anxiety is to make the King James Bible your final authority in all matters of faith and practice, not mans experiences.

You can know for sure that you are saved and going to Heaven no matter what. Read this Gospel message and get saved today:

The Bible Way to Heaven

1. Admit you are a sinner.

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; -Romans 3:23

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: -Romans 5:12

*No one is good enough to go to Heaven on their own merit. No matter how much good we do, we still come short.

2. Realize the penalty for your sin.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. -Romans 6:23

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: -Romans 5:12

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. -Revelation 20:14-15

*There is a payment for our sin which is eternal death in a place called Hell and the Lake of Fire.

3. Believe that Christ died, was buried and rose from the grave as a payment for your sin.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. -Romans 5:8

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. -John 3:16

And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; – Acts 10:39-40

*Salvation is simply putting your faith (or believing) that Jesus Christ paid for your sins.

4. Understand that salvation will last forever.

In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; -Titus 1:2

That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. -John 3:15-16

*When God saves you he gives you “eternal/everlasting” life; in other words, life that will never end; life that will last forever. So, when he saves you it is forever. No matter what you do after you receive “the gift of eternal life” it can never end. Otherwise God lied, and we know that God “cannot lie”.

5. Pray and ask Jesus Christ to save you.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. -Romans 10:9-10

*Eternal life is a gift purchased by the blood of Jesus and offered freely to those who call upon Him by faith. Anyone who believes on the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved forever. Being saved is a one time event. All you have to do is ask.

Let me help you word a prayer. Realize it is not mere words that save, but your faith in Jesus Christ.

Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I know I deserve to go to Hell. But I believe that you died on the cross, were buried, and rose from the grave to pay for my sins. Please save me and take me to Heaven when I die. Amen.

Now, to expound on eternal security:

The moment an individual believes on Christ, trusting Him alone, an instantaneous, irreversible event takes place with eternal implications.
A new birth occurs, establishing a bond that can never be broken.

John 1:12 says, "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:"

According to the above passage, those who believe in Jesus Christ "become the sons of God."

Galatians 3:26 says, "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus."

Just as there is no sin your child can commit whereby they forfeit their sonship, there is no sin a son of God can commit whereby they forfeit their sonship and lose their salvation.

This is not to say that sin is without consequences. God promises to chasten His children and correct them in love.

ONCE A SON, ALWAYS A SON

Hebrews 12:6 says, "For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth."

Though a believer cannot lose their salvation, they can suffer the loss of: Joy (Psalm 51:12), Blessing (Psalm 1:1), Good health/Physical life (1 Corinthians 11:30) and Eternal Rewards (1 Corinthians 3:14-15).

There are indeed consequences for sin in the believer's life.

However, the security of our salvation is not dependent upon our behavior. It is dependent upon our Savior.

The same Savior said that: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

The Lord promised "everlasting life" to "whosoever believeth." Logically, if that life does not last forever, was it "everlasting"? Absolutely not. If salvation can be lost, then the life which we possess is not eternal nor is it everlasting.

Notice the consistent witness of these passages:

"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." John 3:36

"And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?" John 11:26

"And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:40

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life." John 6:47

Not only do believers presently possess everlasting life, but we are also presently "not condemned."

John 3:18 says, He that believeth on him is not condemned."

John 5:24 says, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."

Not only am I not condemned currently, but I shall not come into condemnation in the future. Remember, these are the words of the God, Who cannot lie (Titus 1:2). If God cannot lie, I cannot be condemned!

Romans 6:23 says, "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

The gift of Gid is eternal life and the "gifts and calling of God are without repentance" (Romans 11:29). Meaning, God's not going to change His mind and take back the gift He gave you.

The ever faithful Christ promised to "never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5), there is nothing that can separate you from the love of God.

Romans 8:38-39 says, "For I am persuaded, that neither death (suicide included), nor life (the way in which we live), nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

To adhere to the idea that salvation can be lost and maintain that you still possess yours is self-righteous delusion.

If we could lose salvation, we would lose salvation. We sin every single day in thought, word or deed. Thankfully for the believer, "God dealeth with you as with sons" (Hebrews 12:7) and His grace is greater than all our sin!

"Well," some may ask, "what if I stop believing?" 2 Timothy 2:13 says, " If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself." Friend, the wisdom of men will imagine endless hypotheticals to oppose the plain speech of the word of God. Let God be true but every man a liar! Jesus said in John 10, "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." In one verse we find three great truths concerning the security of our salvation:

1) The possession of eternal life
2) The promise to never perish
3) The power of God's protection

Once you're saved, you're always saved!

Ephesians 1:13-14 says, "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory."

The moment faith is placed in the Savior, the believer is sealed with the Holy Spirit until the redemption of the purchased possession. This truth alone completely contradicts the notion that salvation can be lost.

Jesus said in John 6:39, "And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day."

A better question than "can I lose my salvation?" is "can Jesus lose me?"

If Jesus cannot lose me, I cannot be lost.

What are the practical implications of our eternal security?

Titus 2:11-12 says, "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;"

The same grace that saves us is the same grace that teaches us we should[/I] live soberly, righteously, and godly. "Should" meaning, we don't have to, we get to!

We don't have to go to church,
we get to go to church.
We don't have to read the Bible,
we get to read the Bible.
We don't have to do good works,
we get to do good works.

Understanding that, whether we do or whether we don't has no standing on the security of our salvation. This truth should invigorate and motivate us to present our bodies "a living sacrifice" which is our "reasonable service" unto God.

1 John 5:10-11 says, "He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son."

According to the above passage, anyone who denies the eternality of salvation is effectively making God a liar. To say that salvation can be lost is to say that salvation is not eternal. This is both logically and biblically inconsistent.

1 John 5:13 says, "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

God's desire is for you to know that you have eternal life, do you know that?

I always suggest a therapist. random comments online dont know you or your life. it cant be taken seriously. Your peace of mind is worth something. A good therapist is worth the price too. But, the concept of anxiety is about control. You need control here. It may be helpful to explore the need to control this outcome? It maybe helpful to go into the “what ifs” and truly go into what the worst is? And further determining the reality of that. Maybe learning to let go of control is best? Anxiety is not fact. Its a feeling and its trying to give you a message.

There is only One whom you can turn to and trust, Jesus.
The book.Hebrews 2:14, 15 says "14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death."
Jesus died on the cross to forgive our sins and bring salvation. He rose from the dead and brings eternal life. To all who believe in Him and are saved from sin, death, and hell. He gives us freedom from the power of the devil.
Trust in Jesus and the words He has given us in the New Testament.

My bigger fear isn't hell. It's void after death. I don't suffer from ocd from this, but it certainly makes me think. The fact that I have absolutely no control over this puts my mind in ease. Just have faith.
Only 2 things that for sure work.

1. As soon as you feel it, start walking
2. Breath through the nose and exhale through mouth

The main thing to understand is, what triggers it.

Mostly it's the gut

There are books for self help. Look for Judith rapoport
Maybe if you stopped watching scary stuff you'd stop being scared of it? On the other hand is being afraid of hell fire making you live a holier lifestyle? If so carry on 😅

There is no hell or heaven outside this earth and outside this life. People make their lives hell or heaven by their own thoughts and actions. Like you have made your life a hell by overthinking all this non sense in your mind.
