Proving my social capabilities...

At the gym, to seem like I am more friendly, I have started to nod hello, sometimes wave hello, and smile more at people who I regularly see. Today, it worked pretty well and everyone smiled or nodded hello back. No one waved back. Perhaps that is an overkill move, I don't know.

In any case, my concern now is that someone will think that I am encouraging them to come over and talk to me. I mean, most of these people I don't know; I just see them regularly. And if they start talking to me, I don't know what I would do or what I would say. Once someone starts interrogating me for personal information like my name, it becomes a burden and surprisingly, I literally shut down.

So, I don't know if this a good long-term strategy, but it does prove once and for all I can initiate being friendly to other people in a purely social way.

With enough practice, you'll finally figure it out. Very brave, PaulMark

@deadgerbil First of all it hasn't been a decade. And I haven't been denying it exactly. Maybe it has been close to a decade but even it has been, I mean, it's been steady advancement. I think I have been pretty clear about that. And besides, it's not about figuring it out. It's about taking some solid action to navigate these challenging circumstances that would probably crush most people.

@MarkPaul steady improvement?

I am going to do this. I am going to initiate conversations with people.

So you've made no progress, choking over basic interactions

Just stop lol

@deadgerbil Okay, so I didn't initiate a conversation... exactly. But I kind of initiated a "hello" in a friendly way. That's basically what I set out to do... you know as a first step. Mission accomplished some would say and I agree. I guess the next step could be an actual conversation or something. I just don't know what I would say or how to navigate something like that with someone I don't even know. So, I guess that's why I might appear someone apprehensive. But that doesn't mean I won't do it. It's probably the next logical step... although there might be something better before I take that giant leap.
