I hate when people tell me to mingle at social events...
I was at an after-work company party and feeling a little bit annoyed that everyone was engaged in conversations and 2 people separately came over to me to tell me to "mingle." I mean I wasn't just standing looking out into space. Maybe I was, but if I was it was because everyone was already in small groups so I couldn't just barge in. So, yeah maybe it did appear that I was just staring into space. But if I was it wasn't really my fault.
Anyway, after I was told that the second time, I moved closer to a larger group of people, so it looked like I was somewhat connected to that group. I had no idea what to say. I'm not even sure what they were talking about. It sounded like just a bunch of wasted words. When the group broke up, I tried to find another group but was back to standing in the corner just nodding me head and smiling. Finally, some people I knew came by and started talking so I moved closer to them and politely laughed at whatever they were saying at the appropriate moments. The whole thing was unsettling.
I guess these types of social events are not my thing. Surprisingly, this is one area of social interaction where I have not really been able to make much progress.
