I can't figure out why I keep getting singled out and oppressed by multiple people who insist I display social anxiety
I don't have social anxiety and it's annoying that out of the blue people want to insist I do. Within the last week, I have had to endure literally 10 different comments like...
1. "Do you have social anxiety?"
2. "It seems like you might have some social anxiety."
3. How long have you been experiencing social anxiety?
4. "Are you doing anything for your social anxiety?"
5. "Have you always had social anxiety?"
6. "Have you tried therapy for your social anxiety?"
7. "Why are you so quiet?"
8. "I know someone [son, daughter, friend, cousin] who had social anxiety and they..."
9. "Why do you seem so startled?"
10. "I've never seen anyone with this much social anxiety. You really should do something about it."
OMG. I don't have social anxiety. It's not like I'm keeping count but there is no way this many people could possibly come to a conclusion that I do. It's literally like it's a conspiracy. I mean I know it isn't, but it feels like it is.
There is nothing that I do that even gives off the hint that I have social anxiety, at least to the untrained eye. I mean, yeah, I can become somewhat awkward in social situations under certain circumstances. And I'm not denying that on occasion, at least in the distant past, I have felt compelled to sidestep certain social situations out of a temporary fear, I guess you could call it, over encountering a stranger or someone who caught me off-guard. My point is that it annoys the hell out of me that people think they need to...
1. Diagnose me with social anxiety.
2. Reassure me like I'm some little kid that it's okay.
3. Offer a solution.
I don't have social anxiety. I'm not some little kid that needs reassurance. So, offering a solution to a non-existent problem is insane. And telling me they have never seen anyone with so much social anxiety is literally what finally set me off (today). Surprisingly, I don't really have the mindset to confront the people who oppress me like this, so I just smile and nod my head which only seems to encourage them and so it becomes a non-stop cycle.
