I never know what to do in unrehearsed situations...

I still use a book bag and went to buy a new one. A little kid pointed at me as I was checking one out and said, "that's the one I want." His mother smiled and I could tell she was thinking it was strange that I was checking it out for myself. The kid took the same one from the shelf and also was trying it on and he said, look... we both have the same one. The mother laughed. I had no idea what to say or do.

They walked away and I realized how I can't relate to anyone my own age while that little kid related to me. I can't seem to mature. I don't know if I am just lacking in self-confidence right now. Surprisingly, I never know what to say or do in unrehearsed situations.

Surprisingly

@deadgerbil Well, I find it surprising. I mean, maybe it has happened to me once or twice before, but if it did, it's still surprising that it happened again, now after making so much progress. Or, at least, I thought I was making progress...

@MarkPaul you have posts going back 10 years describing social anxiety in similar situations... There's nothing surprising about this or your denial

@deadgerbil OMG. This again? That's not social anxiety. It's... well, I don't exactly what it is, but that's not social anxiety. I mean, I was caught off-guard because of what that kid said. I would have been fine if he didn't say anything at all.
