I got yelled at on the street because I didn't greet someone I know...

I was taking a walk to get some air during lunch, and I noticed someone from school and our eyes met but I didn't know what to say so I just kept walking and then he turned around and caught up with me and berated me for not saying hello.

I still didn't know what to say, so I said, "sorry" and he called me an "asshole." I said "sorry" again and he forced the issue that I did see him. I tried to deny it, I guess, because he told me not to deny I saw him, but I guess I wasn't very persuasive. I honestly just didn't know how to greet him... exactly. Anyway, we did talk amicably for a bit and then went in opposite directions.

I mean we do know each other, but not that well and I haven't seen him in quite some time. And I'm not very good with greetings in those kinds of circumstances. I'm okay after the greeting part. Anyway, it was pretty intense but at least I got through it, and we did have a pretty good conversation after the awkward initial encounter. I guess I need to add greeting people to my list of things I need to get better at doing.
