My husband and I test drove my car around the block to see how it drove. While he was driving it, the dashboard lit up again and this time the Check Engine light was also flashing, indicating a misfire somewhere. We aren't sure what exactly is going...

Backfiring is a valve timing problem, or valve damage problem

A fuel injector failing would explain the misfire. When you take it to a mechanic, have them check the oil also because those engines had an issue with oil dilution in their early years.
