I can only speak for myself when I say this but,
when I felt pretty bad, I used to ask myself these types of questions:
"If there was one thing that made you feel better, what would it be?"
"If I could change something about this situation in the long run, what would it be?"
"and if things could change, would I still feel this way?"
Kinda made me focus on the things I could do, gave me some hope etc
also, distractions can help break the mood when things got intense,
could be looking at funny memes etc
Kinda calmed the moment down and made things more stable so I could think of solutions to my problems
