With the US election so close to call, and with so much anger (and disbelief) on either side, how will the winner ever bring both sides together?

I think it's too close to call.

Polls say Hillary is very slightly ahead, but with Trump continuing to gain, I think he may win.

He may lose the electoral college thus Hillary will be President Elect, with Trump still winning the majority in the actual popular vote.

Either way, it makes leading difficult. There will be pools of bad blood on either side.

If that happens, how will they lead and bring the country together?

Not that I think either of them believes that is even possible.

That's a very good question you have. I truly hope that the losing side will accept the loss gracefully, and the winning side won't gloat and cause hard feelings. The divisions in this country are very bad. You're a young woman and haven't lived that long, but in all of my years things have never been as bad as they are now with these divisions.

Politically, both sides need to remember that the other side is not the enemy. Republicans and Democrats mostly want what's best for the country. They just have different views on what works best. I'm pretty sure Congress will never get over their petty partisan behavior. But we the people need to look to ourselves for how to behave and not to them. We need to get along and not hate the other side no matter what they do or don't do. We can't let them continue to divide us this way.

And we are all individuals. You said in your replies that Republicans don't accept President Obama because he's black. Some don't. But most do. All Republicans are not the same any more than all Democrats are the same. As a young woman I'm sure that abortion rights are important to you. Many Republicans are not against abortion. Most Republicans are not super wealthy multi-billionaires. Some are. But so are some Democrats.

Bottom line is that Republicans are not the enemies of Democrats any more than Democrats are the enemies of Republicans. The answer to your post is that we the people need to be better than Congress and we need to respect each other and get along with each other. We are all in this together. Thanks for your post, and thanks for listening to this long reply.

@CassandraFemale17: You're welcome. And after reading your reply just now, I probably misspoke about there not being a deficit during President Clinton's term. But I do know he left a surplus. So I believe you to be correct that the deficit was reduced during his terms rather than not existing.

@RealMustangGuy: that was my memory too of what I had read. Clinton though did amazingly too for employment. With more people working, there's more taxes rolling in to address those huge debts
RealMustangGuy · 61-69, MVIP
@CassandraFemale17: Not sure how much credit I'd give to any president for fuller employment, but you're right that when everyone is working there is more money all around including for the government. Then the problem that occurs is Congress mismanages the tax revenue. They after all are the branch of government that controls the money.

Simple fact. Doesn't matter who wins.. we'll likely never heal these wounds and the division will only grow as one half sees the other as illegitimate. Where this train is going you don't even want to try and imagine right now. If you don't believe in prayer.. just try and be as positive and loving as you can in your personal life and opt out of all the negativity.
Ynotisay · M
You make a good point. Unfortunately, the facts point directly to one party as being responsible for the current divide. Makes sense as it's been part of the GOP strategy since Reagan. Divide and Conquer. You're either with us or against us. That's what brought us to the worst performing Congress in history.

@hunkalove: Hahahaha Hillary was a senator. One among 100. How do people think she could make all these changes they wanted all by herself? Then she was Secretary of State which is advisory position on Foreign Affairs. She doesn't dictate foreign affairs. She advises. The President. It's up to him, to accept, to ignore, or to negate her advice. Beyond that her work was in the private sector unless you count her days as First Lady. Again, a supporting role.

Name one senator who rules the senate and gets everything they want. It doesn't happen, but again and again, people say she was in the senate and things didn't get any better. How could they? Republicans blocked everything the Democrats want to do.

I see more of the same whomever wins
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@Ynotisay: 100% right. But when you mention Reagan, you might get their attention if you call him Saint Ronald. Lol

They even think he was good for the economy, yet when you read or watch historical and factual discourses on Reaganomics it was horrible for the middle class and poor, great for the wealthy, who then all got behind the republicans, and created huge debt.

But they won't read it. It's like global warming. It doesn't exist if they keep their eyes shut tight

According to most non-partisan tracking groups Clinton has about a 75% chance of winning the electoral votes which is all that matters. She stands at about an 85% chance of winning the popular vote.
As an American it's hard to say this but we live in a pretty stupid country when compared with others. My personal BELIEF is that despite fact deficient, emotional thinkers beating their chests and wanting to burn shit down (in opposition to their own best interests); reason will prevail.
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
Yes but a mathematician will tell you that with Hillary at 75% chance of winning the electoral college, that means that Trump would in theory win one out of every four elections with those numbers.and that has happened in history!

Let's hope this is not the one.

That 75% does not mean Hillary gets 75% of the votes. If only!
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
Lol. True. But the Republicans have not still accepted that an African American is their present president. So much for acceptance.

I do agree with you though. It's what is best
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@Loretta78: I have read the same. Until each voter learns to vote for whomever will advance their own lives instead of being riled up by those advancing the causes of their donors, it won't change.

Until the media stops making celebrities out of sideshows it won't change.

Unless people reject fear mongering and whipping up anger, it won't change.

And until there is a return to some semblance of civility, it won't change.

You can disagree with someone without reducing them to trash. It happens every day in relationships, marriages, workplaces, schools, and lines in McDonald's.
Why can't political leaders try it out?
Loretta78 · 46-50, F
@CassandraFemale17: That´s a good question! 🤔
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@Loretta78: it won't happen because they don't want it to happen. If you keep painting your opponent as corrupt, restful, lacking originality, inept, threatening to your way of life etc.....some of it sticks. If enough of it sticks, you can win the next election.

Refusing to get along has its benefits too. It eventually erodes the supporters on the other side. Say 2+2=5 long enough and loud enough, and loads of ignorant people will start to believe you
hunkalove · 61-69, M
We are being lied to by the corporate news media so they can create controversy and sell advertising. I will be very surprised if Trump takes more than four or five states, mostly in the South.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@CassandraFemale17: I don't think Trump ever had even the slightest chance.
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@hunkalove: let's talk Wednesday when the popular vote comes about. You may live in an area that rejects Trump outright. There are millions of Amerians so angry that they will swallow hard, and vote for Trump just to give the middle finger to Washington as it is. A dysfunctional pool of money collectors who have their own futures as lobbyists always in their vision.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@CassandraFemale17: You're right, but do you really think it would be any different under Trump? The guy has done nothing but lie and cheat his whole life.

Let's hope it materializes
JohnOinger · 41-45, M
Hillary will win it
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
I sure hope so. I hope they take the Senate too so work can actually take place. Not this obstructionism the Senate threatens to continue
Loretta78 · 46-50, F
Let´s hope and pray for that! 🙏
Curiousguy833 · 31-35, M
Well at the very least the "loser" should accept the lose gracefully and not jeopardise democracy ...
hunkalove · 61-69, M
There is no "democracy" in America. Would most Americans choose garbage like Trump or Hillary?
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@hunkalove: you are right. It has become Goverment of the Rich, by the Rich and for the Rich.

It's basically always been like that with the wealthy founders protecting their wealth and position from the beginning. It's just far more blatant now
Loretta78 · 46-50, F
Right now I´ve read in the news that Trump will send on the election-day many of his fans to the places where people can elect. They want to "take care" that the Democrats can´t cheat. They even want to take weapons in theese places. What an election!!! 😭
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
It's a zoo. But remember Trump does not exist in a vacuum. It's indicative of Republicans who this election are refusing to accept a result that doesn't go their way. It's a freak show. They won't even consider a review for a Supreme Court nominees should Hillary win. They speak of impeachment should she win, and they will fight the results of a fair election should she win.

It's like a 5 year old who takes his ball out of the game and goes home coz the other guy scored
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
Trump is scary and is still a threat even if he loses. One thing their election cycle did is to empower all types of conspiracy theory wing nuts.

It is difficult to run against a conspiracy. Fight them with the truth and they will deny it. They claim the truth is a lie to cover up yet another conspiracy.

It appeals to primal fears. Them vs. Us.
olderguy2016 · 70-79, M
How is your election campaign going on
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@olderguy2016: I wil be at a party in Ellicotteville. About 40-50 of us. From all sides of the spectrum. I won't gloat, but I'm sure I will heave a sigh of relief.
olderguy2016 · 70-79, M
@CassandraFemale17: I am sure you will dance and jump with victory.
