Will we see a united Ireland in our lifetime?

They certainly don't want the hard border again that may have to happen if Northern Ireland is to be dragged out of the EU by the UK.

I think actually technically the way all the laws and regulations and stuff are written if NI has a referendum and vote to join with Ireland legally neither the UK nor Ireland can stop them. The good Friday deal may have changed this but when the split happened I think that was the case

It has been peaceful for a while. Maybe that is enough reason to leave things alone. Good point though they will need border control once UK is out of the EU.

why is there a divide between protestants and Catholics in ireland? they are both Christians worshiping the same god using the same bible. just some differences in style of worship services and building architecture. i dont even know the religion of most of my friends.

ohh. why not call them protestants so others are not confused??
thatscottishguy · 26-30, M
Because I'm used to everyone around me calling them proddies. Didn't really think about it.
trackboy · 22-25, M
hmm interesting calling them proddies. you go to each others churches? have a church of the week club where each week you go to a different church???

A united Ireland would be nice, but as an American it's none of my business.

@MightyAphrodite: Would it stir that up though? We aren't talking about a forced union but as said above if both had a clear majority in favour it wouldn't be a problem.

@thatscottishguy: I can't see it working at all... there are too many people up the North who are happy to be part of the UK , too many who want nothing to do with the Rep.
thatscottishguy · 26-30, M
It's a nice thought at least.

I hope not, I think everything is fine just as it is.. it would be a disaster to change it..
why would you want that to change realistically?
Up north there is many people who'd hate that..
Footballstar · 26-30, M
Everything is fine as it is in Ireland. Up north is a whole different story

@thatscottishguy: I don't think you read my comment properly

@MightyAphrodite: You responded to me with "I'm not being dragged out the EU". When I hadn't said that, I said NI are.

I won't put my nose in their business as they have ours!!

@DixieChick: Well that's pretty pointless😂.
Footballstar · 26-30, M
@DixieChick: still don't get the whole Ireland sticking their nose into American business. When has that ever happened?

While there are religious undertones, Protestantism v Catholicism shouldn't really be an issue for it anymore. It's unionism v republicanism.
I always wonder (although I realize I don't know all the logistics), do a majority of Irish and Scottish want to be separate from England and English influences ? Is it even possible ?
thatscottishguy · 26-30, M
I believe come the next independence referendum a majority of Scots will want away (I can't take another defeat😂 It destroyed me last time). I think Irish reunification is becoming more likely now but it's still a long way off.

The majority of Irish people are separate from England
