What are your predictions for the Rugby World Cup Quater-Finals?

The unfairness of the draw sucks but it does have one advantage. Normally a first-seed vs second-seed match is only semi-competitive but this time all the best four teams are playing each other, as are the second-best four teams. Each game is hard to predict and likely to be really close.

Personally, I think that the northern hemisphere team is a slight favourite in each game. The most likely thing would be two or three northern teams getting to the semis but literally anything can happen. It will be fascinating.

So only one northern hemisphere side into the semi finals and that's England, who'd have thought no Ireland and no France.

Looking like a New Zealand South Africa final.

At least two of the quarter finals were worthy of the final with South Africa a a New Zealand showing why they are both so feared.
Uncfred · 61-69, M
@OldBrit You echo my thoughts exactly, though I would like to see it as England v New Zealand.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Uncfred can't see us beating South Africa I'm afraid

@OldBrit Its happened before, lets wait and see (I have some finger nail left).

You Commonwealth people…
@Burnley123 Speaking of Rugby and Canada I always got the vibe that Rugby in other countries like the UK had more of a working class vibe.

Here in Canada it is very aristocratic. The public high schools (as in state run schools. I know it means something else in England) we have football.

Rugby teams tend to be the boarding schools equivalent to places like Eton in the UK.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow No, Rugby Union is very much a middle class or upper middle class sport, even more than cricket is. Football is working class and rugby league is very working class.

In Wales and NZ rugby union is a game for everyone. In all other places, it's a game for the professional classes upwards.
@Burnley123 Good to know.

It's very difficult to call. I'm hoping for England and France to win, so they can play each other on Trafalgar Day.

@Burnley123 it works like that in the latter stages of the chamions league i think it should be drawn from a hat that gives everyone a fair chance
I predict an NZ v SA final
So it will be England v Argentina😀
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@TheSirfurryanimalWales yep given I'd thought Ireland vs France final during the group stages... 😂

BTW only unbeatable team in semi finals? Yep England. How'd we manage to do that?!
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M

So far, it's two out of two for the Southern Hemisphere!
MethDozer · M
Does the World cup play by League or Union rules?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@MethDozer I agree with all of that. I come from a football-dominated town (called Burnley) so I don't really even have a club team in either code of rugby to follow. So like a lot of casual rugby fans, I just follow the international teams.

Rugby League is faster but it's just so repetitive. 80% of the game is pass-run-tackle-pkay the ball. Rugby Union has more variety and it's my second favourite sport. Rugby League is also dominated by Australia and the international game is so predictable that the Aussies see their State of Origin series (Queensland vrs New South Wales) as the highest representative level.

Rugby Union has a serious international game with several competitive teams.

@MethDozer @Burnley123 Rugby League aka Big Boys Touch.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@KiwiBird I met a guy called Elijah Taylor the other day. He's an ex-NZ league international and Warriors player. He's still playing here in the UK. For confidentiality, I can't reveal how I know him on a public thread.

He is a really nice bloke btw.
