Will anyone ever be better than your favorite sports star?

My fixation is Babe Ruth. The man still has records that will probably never be broken.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Their records may be broken but they’re both amazing role models and pure class.
@OlderSometimesWiser

Looking back, Borg was European along with Becker, Lendl, Nadal, Federer... unlike the brash twins Conners and McEnroe.

McEnroe annoyed me no end.
@rinkydinkydoink McEnroe was certainly a brat. He’s actually become a fairly decent commentator though. At first he was extremely annoying, wouldn’t shut the hell up but he’s gotten a lot better at not yapping straight through points. Funny when he’s in the booth with brother Patrick. They have the exact same voice so if they’re not on camera you’re oftentimes not sure who’s talking.
@OlderSometimesWiser

You know, I was going to post a vid of McEnroe being interviewed by Martin Short as Jiminy Glick to illustrate how disagreeable he could be but re-watching it made me realize his "act" was kinda funny. It worked so why change?

I'm an oddball.

'Hondo", "the Washington Monument" and "the Capital Punisher"

Frank Howard has been my favorite since I was a kid and watched him at several live games with the Senators.
One game I was there when the pitchers kept outside pitch walking him. He had enough and got pi-sed and actually jumped out of the box and hit the ball for a double before his feet touched the ground.
@Gibbon

He is ALWAYS mentioned by one broadcasting team or another when strength, size and huge arms are being discussed.
@Gibbon

Stanton just hit another HR - the guy's on fire.

@rinkydinkydoink He passed a year ago this month. I will never forget my last sight of him when the Nationals made the world series and he rolled out in a wheelchair along 1st base line and was honored by the team.

Johnny Weissmuller.....never lost a swimming race....then became MGM's Tarzan, then at RKO.
@JSul3

You're probably the only film historian (that's what you are!) who has thought of this.
It would be interesting to know :D

@rinkydinkydoink Thank you for tour kind words....I am flattered.

Another fun fact: Former Olympic swimmer Josephine McKim was Maureen's double in the nude swimming scenes in Tarzan and His Mate....and she was the mermaid in the jar, one of Dr. Pretorious' experiments in '35 Bride of Frankenstein.
@JSul3

I've seen Bride. Those glass jar scenes still hold up.

No one willl be better than this guy:

But this guy was awesome as well:

@luckranger71 I was at the final four in New Orleans in 1982 and had a perfect view of Jordan's game winning jump shot for North Carolina
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
@eli1601 That's awesome! Great memory.
@luckranger71

I also read somewhere that Jim Brown said he jumped out of his chair when he first saw Payton run... he couldn't believe his skill and determination. When I was a kid I saw Jim Brown on the TV most every week because Cleveland was shown on CBS a lot out of WBEN Buffalo.

Ruth was also a pitcher.
@eli1601

I know Ford has the most WS victories (10 or 11) so maybe so - - !

Yep! Thanks for notifying me. How the hell did I think it was Hershiser??
eli1601 · 70-79, M
@rinkydinkydoink I think Orel was only in one WS. He probably didn't even pitch 29 innings total.

He does, however, have the regular season scoreless innings record.
@eli1601

Thanks :D
‘Joey’ johns changed the way the game is played ..the GOAT

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout

Googling him it looks like you're right.

Johns announced his retirement from rugby league on 10 April 2007 at the age of 32. This followed a long run of injuries, the last of which was a bulging disc in his neck which forced his retirement due to the risk of serious spinal injury from further heavy contact.

!!! That is some scary stuff.

@eli1601

Got a book that compared Seaver to Nolan Ryan for the first 19 years of their respective careers (that's when my last Bill James book was published). Seaver won more games/lost fewer than Ryan. You might think one of the reasons may have been that was because Ryan played on shittier teams... NOT SO. Seaver played on weaker teams over the course of his first19 years.

Ryan walked way too may batters for one thing...
eli1601 · 70-79, M
@rinkydinkydoink The Mets traded Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi in a horrible trade. They could have had a rotation of Seaver, Koosman, and Ryan.
@eli1601

Woulda been something special :D

Torville and Dean.
@meggie

Instantly knew who they were so I've heard about them. Not sure if I saw them, though :D
Hank Aaron broke his home run record, but 50 years later.
