My guess is they were taught to fear such things. And it is not entirely unreasonable although a bit extreme. But messing with the other side when you don't know what you are doing can go sideways real fast.

demons are fallen angels who joined Satan in his rebellion against God and who were defeated and cast out of heaven along with Satan (Revelation 12:7-9).
Note, it discusses demons, not spirits. The two are not the same. Tambourines used to be used in Sances to call spirit. Are you also boycotting those?
