Religion throughout History

With or without religion good people will do good and evil people will commit evil. But for good people to commit evil , that takes religion.,

Nice throw away line for the political satirist comedians. But in reality, it takes religion for people PROFESSING to be good to commit evil. There are good people who truly try to live by the tenets of their religion rather than spending all their time trying to proselytize and force their views on everyone else.
@dancingtongue The tenents of their religion . Yep.

And the tenents of their religion, justified slavery, torture, genocide, and countless other atrocities.

@Ryderbike Depends upon the religion, and which interpretation you are going by. The tenets of Christ's teachings did not include any of those. But organized so-called Christian churches, beginning with the Catholics and continuing through the Reformation, if you will notice, almost always quote the Old Testament that Christ was trying to break from and reform; not his teachings of love & what the former would now call socialism. Similar distinctions of interpretation can be made between Orthodox and Reformed Judaism, different sects of Islam, and practically all religions. The possible exceptions are the Sikhs and Taoists, neither of which tries to impose their views on others.
@dancingtongue well, let me ask you a question. If your religion teaches you that Israel and the Jewish people are godschosen people, and Israel commits a war crime and you Support it, would that constitute a tenent of your religion? Would you constitute forcing women to birth against their will a tenent of religion?

@Ryderbike My religion -- if you can call it that -- does neither, nor anything similar. And most modern day religions have abandoned such early day beliefs, leaving them only for the extremists trying to live in the past: they are using past teachings of their religions to do evil today while posing as good people, which doesn't exclude the fact there are good people actually following more recent teachings and interpretations who are doing good rather than evil. My original point.
@dancingtongue you clearly are avoiding the two very clear examples I i gave you of religious oppression of peoples rights,
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Ryderbike No, I am not. I am saying that as a recovering Catholic that it is possible to move beyond living with the baggage of the past without being in denial about it.
@dancingtongue why would you think this is about you?
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Ryderbike Possibly because you addressed it to me and claimed I was avoiding your examples when all I was saying was don't generalize to all religious people for the misdeeds of some?
@dancingtongue it should be clear enough that I don’t condemn individuals and their beliefs.

It’s the Christian organizations that force their views on others via their radicalized representatives,
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Ryderbike Too many of them, but not all of them. You are still generalizing.
@dancingtongue have they managed to pass forced birthing laws or not? Was Roe overturned?
