Do you believe in the power of prayer?

There are some things I've been praying for my whole life that haven't come true, so now I'm getting to the point where I think prayer is for finding the strength to accept terrible things as they are rather than for changing the circumstances. Have you ever had a prayer answered?

A friend told me that it’s best not to pray directly for what I want, but to pray for what is good for me, trusting myself to whoever I am praying to.
I had this strange experience which shouldn’t be connected..yet.. I had a friend who was very sick for weeks. I prayed for him to get well, intensely. I prayed for a whole afternoon. To the point where I got myself sick with fever. The next day i was feeling off but he called to tell me he’s doing well finally… few days later, his best friend died.
