He's a terrible arrogant person, the ugly face of vulgar materialism. Atheism would probably deserve a better quasi-official representative.
[edit: replaced "arrogant d*ckhead" by "arrogant person"]

@helenS it's him and people like Sam Harris that makes me dislike the New Atheist movement. I have no problem with Atheists, but these aren't Atheists, they Antitheists.
helenS · 36-40, F
@basilfawlty89 I think he really represents a huge number of scientists/researchers who are tempted to reduce the world to those phenomena they can observe in a laboratory. I think it's called "Reductionism" or "Reductivism" or something like that.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@helenS indeed, but also their other stances. Like Sam Harris is a notable Islamophobe.

@helenS Agree!

@Carazaa Thank you my friend! 🌼
@helenS yes, I said something similar. Probably uses that mugshot on his passport.

@Elevatorpitches Actually, some of his earlier books were very good and enlightening, especially The Selfish Gene (1976) and The Blind Watchmaker (1986).
That was before he started proselytizing atheism aggressively.
@helenS He's too selfish to speak seriously about atheism, which is actually our default worldwise religion, somebody had better take it seriously...and do better at it.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Elevatorpitches My problem with this type of atheism is that it's vulgar. It reduces the world to observable phenomena. Mind has no place in his world view; mind is, in his opinion, just an interaction of neurons. It's not just atheism, it's materialism. 😐
@helenS I took a class in post-Neitzsche theologians and most of them honored atheism and then...talked more. Chardin, Tillich, Barth, and Gilbert Vahanian himself, the professor.

I'm an atheist too and yet I experience abundant synchronicity. Doesn't require belief but only attention ;=)
@Elevatorpitches Why should atheists be nice about religion?
@BlueSkyKing no its not about "nice" but theres a sacred yearning in us for meaning. And materialism just can't satisfy that.
helenS · 36-40, F
@BlueSkyKing Science makes the world a meaningless place. It's a bleak dismal hodgepodge of elementary particles and radiation.
The real task is to construct meaning, to give the world a meaning, while accepting that the results of science are correct.
@blueSkyKing ummm...Black holes and quantum gravity are very meaningful, people find spectacular meaning in the possibility of exterrestrial life and communication with it. Doesnt have to be invented, its built right in, not the fault of the realities that we don't understand it. Im also NOT contradicting myself. Whats this either/or stuff here?
@helenS So you rather have the warm and fuzzy lies instead the cold truth? Science is not a position, it’s a method. Far from perfect but the best we have. It also has the annoying habit of working.
Carazaa · F
@BlueSkyKing Dawkins was born in Kenya and obviously was influenced by wichcraft in Africa that turned him against religion! Jesus is something different and he is loving, Dawkins is hateful!
@Carazaa An ad hominem fallacy is your response? Someone’s birth location and witchcraft for why he’s an atheist?

Ad hominem attacks can take the form of overtly attacking somebody, or more subtly casting doubt on their character or personal attributes as a way to discredit their argument.

@BlueSkyKing She doesn't even make any sense. She just spews hatred toward anyone who doesn't concur with her views.

(Spelling corrected - here > her)
@rob19 her.

But she's probably still "here"
rob19 · M
@Elevatorpitches Thank you, I've corrected it now.
