Do you think if your first exposure to god was reading the old testament that you would love and praise god? [Spirituality & Religion]

Christians are always telling me i need to respect god and devote myself to him...
But if you're going to say god is real and the bible describes his nature to us, how do you get around all the heinous, despicable shit he's apparently done and ordered done?

How do you love and respect someone like that if you're not already starting from a place of faith and excusing such behaviour?

Capital G God, or just the concept of a god?
@Straylight

Well capital G God, since we're talking about the bible.
Straylight · 31-35, F
@Pikachu There had to be a first time I guess.
I wonder where religion started. We'll probably never know.
@Straylight

lol no, probably not
Straylight · 31-35, F
@Pikachu I'd read once that researchers theorized that it came from early hunting practices. Primitive humans brains were capable of empathy and advanced pattern recognition that may have lead to ritualized behavior and a concept of existence beyond death.
@Straylight

Pretty cool.
Yes, i'm of the mind that religion arises from pattern seeking behaviour and from there an attempt to make patters and find explanations for that which we can't explain.

@Pikachu I'm really interested in the evolution of religious beliefs. Have you ever read American Gods? Theres a part where they go to this museum like place that gods go to when they die because humans have forgotten them. The earliest ones were described as wild fires, landslides, and the mist rising from slain prey, frozen in time.
@Straylight

Cool. No i haven't read that.
It's a really interesting question.

You meet some pretty primitive brains here! 🤣🤣🤣@Straylight
@Speedyman Like you?
Speedyman · 70-79, M
I was actually thinking of yours which cannot think beyond the bigoted anti-religious uninformed posts you make. @LeopoldBloom
@Speedyman Look in the mirror when you say that. You're the worst bigot on here. And the difference is, if my side was in charge, we would allow people like you to spout off to your heart's content, but if your side was in charge, people like me would be executed. This has been the disgusting history of your religion and other religions whenever extremists have been in power.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
Oh yes disgusting bigots with atheists like Hitler Mao, Stalin, pol Pot. Of course you wouldn’t be executed you causes too much laughter with your ridiculous statements. You ought to be on the stage in the theatre of the absurd. @LeopoldBloom

@Straylight Every nation has religious beliefs! We are made to worship God! The problem is that if they haven’t been introduced to Jesus who takes away mans sins they make up rituals to appease gods for their sins. We see this in every tribe who can’t read the Bible all over the world! And all tribes sacrifice to their gods!
But the Bible is the only historically correct book where God himself told us to stop sacrificing to other gods because He loves us and we can’t reach heaven no matter how hard we try ! And all sin leads to death! So He came down from heaven, and became a man, and was tortured for your sins!
It’s amazing how loving he is!

@LeopoldBloom
It is not true that we would kill you at all! Christians are the most st persecuted in the world! True Christians follow Jesus and he says to love our enemies 🤗
@Carazaa The No True Scotsman fallacy. I have no doubt that hippyjoe, Godspeed, and other reactionaries would do whatever they could to silence me.

Atheism is a capital offense in several countries, so I take issue with your claim that several billion Christians are the most persecuted.
@Speedyman Hitler was a Christian.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
How would you know as you know nothing outside your tiny bubble? It is a fact that. Christians are the most persecuted group. @LeopoldBloom
Speedyman · 70-79, M
@LeopoldBloom another example of your ignorance of history. Hitler’s next target after destroying the areas was the Christian church. People like you believe anything you read. Why not get some education?
@Speedyman Maybe you should educate yourself.

"We demand freedom for all religious confessions in the state, insofar as they do not endanger its existence or conflict with the customs and moral sentiments of the Germanic race. The party as such represents the standpoint of a positive Christianity, without owing itself to a particular confession...." - Article 20 of the German Worker's Party program, later the Nazi party

My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. ...Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. ...
- Adolf Hitler, speech on April 12, 1922

"Today Christians ... stand at the head of [this country]... I pledge that I never will tie myself to parties who want to destroy Christianity .. We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit ... We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the press..." - Adolf Hitler, quoted in: The Speeches of Adolf Hitler, 1922-1939, Vol. 1 (London, Oxford University Press, 1942), pg. 871-872
@Speedyman You're lying. There are billions of Christians in the world, and Christians are the most persecuted group? What a load of crap. It's a capital offense to be an atheist in several countries; it's not a capital offense to be a Christian anywhere.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
No my friend you are a liar and an uninformed idiot. You do not know anything about it and you do not know what you’re talking about anyway@LeopoldBloom
Speedyman · 70-79, M
@LeopoldBloom You are completely stupid and as gullible as those people are taken in by Hitler. These are all speeches made before he came to office Where he was sucking up to everyone and pretending to be something he wasn’t. He was a good catholic to the good Catholics, the good president of the good Protestants, the good Christian to the good Christians. Of course things changed a lot when he came to office. Don’t you realise how tyrants work or are you so naive? By 1942, Hitler vowed, , to “root out and destroy the influence of the Christian Churches,” describing them as “the evil that is gnawing our vitals.”
“I can’t at present give them the answer they’ve been asking for,” Hitler said. “The time will come when I’ll settle my account with them. They’ll hear from me all right.”
Of course first he had to finish off the Jews. However historical research has shown that Hitler was as atheistic as Stalin or any of the other atheistic monsters of the twentieth century. So when you go to your little atheist websites to pick quotes make sure you pick the right ones
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@Speedyman would you consider Trump to be a Christian!?
Speedyman · 70-79, M
I am not a tall acquainted with Trump’s personal beliefs@Tastyfrzz
@Speedyman By his own words, Hitler was a Christian.

Same as you. What proof do we have that you're a Christian? Because you say you are. Same for Hitler.

Trump claims to be a Christian, although he's said that he has never asked God for forgiveness because he's never done anything wrong.
