I just can't accept the notion that a god who loves anyone at all could order mass murder the way he has. [Spirituality & Religion]

His chosen people are ordered to kill thousands of people, nations of people not even sparing the women and children. After all, that Promised Land was far from empty when the Israelites showed up.
I can't accept that notion.
Or at least i can't love that kind of god. I certainly couldn't.

Where do you suppose that leaves me?

That's because the OT conception of God was closely tied to a specific people and their fate; it's a very "nationalistic" idea of God. That's common in some religions, when religious doctrine is interwoven with historical accounts and the military successes of a people are attributed to having the support of a deity.

That's a good way to put it.
