Question for christians: Why does god refuse to let Moses and Aaron into the land he promised to the descendants of Abraham and Isaac? [Spirituality & Religion]

In Numbers we see that the people are thirsty and god tells Moses to speak some water out of a stone for them.
Moses gathers the people and strikes the stone with his staff and water gushes forth.

God calls this rebellion and says Moses and Aaron will never enter the promised land.

But then in Deuteronomy, Moses says that god was angry with him because of the actions of the isrealites and that's why he was not allowed in.

So what's the deal? Is it because the isrealites lost faith that god punished Moses? Or is it really an inexcusable act of rebellion to produce water from a stone by hitting it instead of speaking to it?

God instructed him to speak to the rock, not to strike it with his staff.

@SweetMae Actually he asked him to strike it.

@Carazaa Which verse?

@SweetMae I think God was upset that the Israelites complained, not specifically about the rock. But it could be. But God specifically said he was upset with them for grumbling and questioning if it had been a good idea to go into the desert to begin with. He says that Moses is the representative of all Israel so he will be the one who has to answer God for the Israelites.
Ex. 17:6 “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

@Carazaa Numbers 20:7-12 New International Version (NIV)
7 The Lord said to Moses, 8 “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.”
9 So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence, just as he commanded him. 10 He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.
12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”

I haven't look into this recently. I think the problem may have been that he "repeatedly struck the rock." I will have to get out my copy of the original text.

@SweetMae Yes but in exodus he asked him to strike the rock. Aaron was upset with Moses because of Moses wife and he was jealous, there was grumbling. But it is possible that the striking also brought more anger to God. We are to obey!

@Carazaa I would have to study that more. To understand the specifics. But Moses certainly angered God.

@SweetMae Moses was complaining to God about the Israelites complaints.

@SweetMae In Numbers 20, you are right he struck the rock, not spoke to it as God had told him. So he did not obey and the Israelites might not have realized that it was Gods doing as much as if he had just spoken.

@Carazaa Thank you! There is so much to learn. 👍️

@SweetMae And it is hard to obey, but thank goodness that God has told us that love covers all sin.
