Be honest: when you read the bible what makes you think it is of divine origin? [Spirituality & Religion]

There was a time in my life where i really wanted to believe and i tried hard to have faith and asked with all my heart that god reveal himself to me. But predictably he did not. And the more i read, the more it became obvious to me that the bible was the work of men.
So base and petty and violent. This was not the work of an enlightened being.

So what makes you feel that the bible is of divine origin?

I was much the same. The majority of those who believe the bible don't know what it actually says.
SW-User
@suzie1960 That’s not true.
@SW-User

I don't know about a majority, but the number of christians who have not read the bible for themselves is staggering.
SW-User
@Pikachu while that is very true, it is not true to say “ the majority of those who believe the Bible don’t know what it actually says”. Furthermore people can’t truly believe what they don’t know (read).

Agreed.
SW-User
@Pikachu I mean you have to read it before you can believe it!
@SW-User

One would think. Of course, reading is not necessarily believing. Certainly not in my own experience.
SW-User
@Pikachu I didn’t say that now did I? Of course many know what it says and do not believe. Last time I’ll say this, one must know what it says to believe it!
@SW-User

um...yes, i agree

I agree but they can believe what they've been told it says is true.

I used to believe in "god" and that the bible was "god's word". It was only when I read it that I found what I've been told it said was at odds with what it actually said. As a result, I became an Atheist.

Many don't but I do. It changed my life.@suzie1960

@Carazaa Reading the bible changed mine too - from a misled christian to a well informed Atheist :)

I am not sure you read all of Genesis, please do, and then we'll talk.@suzie1960
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@Carazaa I'm sure. I read that first, followed by Exodus then Leviticus then Numbers etc. etc. I'm not sure you've read it all though.

I live by the word of God. It helps me.
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@Carazaa What do you mean by "the word of god"? If you mean the bible, it's so full of contradictions that you'd need to specify which of each the contradictory statements you've chosen.
Carazaa · F
There are no contradictions. That's a lie. @suzie1960

@Carazaa
There are no contradictions.
I doubt you've read the bible then. There are a few of the contradictions listed here - https://www.atheists.org/activism/resources/biblical-contradictions/

There are thousands more.
Carazaa · F
The Bible has no contradictions. If I got all your family together and interviewed them about Christmas they would tell me different stories, all true. But the details wouldn't come out unless the stories were different. Different stories, all true! The Bible is true!
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@Carazaa Didn't you read the page I linked to? It listed clear contradictions, not simple minor variations of the same story. The bible mentions a few real places but that doesn't make the whole thing true. The Harry Potter books mention, inter alia, London and King's Cross railway station. Both are real places but I think it's unlikely the Harry Potter books are true.

No contradictions. Different versions does not mean contradictions, sorry to inform you.@suzie1960

@Carazaa The Bible is filled with contradictions. If you read any story in one of the Gospels then read the same story in another Gospel you will find numerous factual contradictions
Carazaa · F
Not true at all. You have been brainwashed by Satan if you believe that. God covers peoples eyes to the truth.
Carazaa · F
The whole world is influenced by Satan.
CookieLuvsBunny · 31-35, F
@Carazaa Two small examples of contradictions:
In Mark, Jesus is crucified on the Passover. In John, Jesus is crucified the day before Passover
In Luke, Jesus is mocked by one thief and defended by the other thief but in Mark, Jesus is mocked by both thieves. Also, Romans didn't crucify thieves. Crucifixion was done to political reactionaries not common criminals
