Does something done out of fear of punishment have moral value?
Straylight · 31-35, F
@Pikachu I'd have to agree. If you're going to call an action good, it must be self motivated. Doing something with the expectation of a reward (heaven) or to avoid punishment (hell) is ultimately selfishly motivated.
@Straylight
Agreed. You might still have done a thing which results in well being but it's not morally motivated which i feel doesn't really count lol

@Straylight what if it's not about heaven or hell but love for God?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@TheWildEcho That carries the problem of potential (inevitable?) conflict between perception of what someone's god sees as moral, and what society sees as moral

@TheWildEcho Then that would be an entirely different subject.

@Straylight yes I agree, Christianity is about a love relationship with God. There are things I do and don't do, not because Im afraid of missing heaven or going to hell, but because I don't want to spoil my relationship with God

@newjaninev2 different people see morality in different ways whether believers or not

@TheWildEcho I hold morality to be behaviour that, to the greatest practicable degree, preserves the well-being of organisms capable of otherwise suffering.
But then, that's just me... I don't want to spoil my relationship with reality

@TheWildEcho Ok, but that's not what I'm talking about.
