I've often encountered the argument from christians that if god isn't real or if evolution is true then how can there be morality? [Spirituality & Religion]

I'd like you to think about that question and posit an answer.
Not an insult, not a criticism. Just think about the question from the perspective that god is not real and see if you can think of an answer to how there could still be morality and moral behaviour.

Morals are the result of God's commandments/religious instructions.

If a person doesn't believe in any creative force beyond physics, then morals would be based upon what is best for the individual and species...as reproduction and survival are the ultimate goals.

I believe that you are mistaken. What you're doing is attempting to use evolution theory as a model for social morality. I can see no valid reason to do this.

Even without god, people still live is social groups and so tend to get along in what we describe as moral ways that even monkeys appear to recognize.
Treat others as you would like to be treated does not require a divine source to be useful as a moral compass, does it?

@Pikachu I realize I didn't elaborate, but if I'm mistaken then your point is in error as that is a likely result of what is best for the species....

BTW, I do believe in God, just tried to answer your question..
@sunrisehawk

You did try to answer the question and that's good. I'm just pointing out what i feel to be errors in the reasoning behind it.

My main contention is that morality (Without god) is determined by the individual and the benefits to an individual when it seems clear to me that in practice morality is an emergent property of a community.

@Pikachu A smoothly functioning community tends to benefit the individual as well anyhow.

Also true. At least in general
