Does human morality come from God or is it a product of our evolution? [Spirituality & Religion]

By @Pikachu
The word immorality tells of things that are not moral and no one can expect to live a sinful lifestyle and still claim to be a child of God. As the Apostle John warns “Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning” (1 John 1:8a) so don’t be deceived, “No one born of God, makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he will not want to keep on sinning because he has been born of God” (1 John 1:9).
This is why God gave us a conscience....to know right from wrong.

Religion is the least moral thing in the world. Almost all the atrosities come from religion. If you get your morals from God you're fooling yourself. Morality is only a product of human evolution, That's where the word meme comes from..... Ask Dawkins

It's perhaps instructive to carefully define what we mean by 'moral' behaviour. I would offer:

'Behaviour which seeks to maximise the well-being of creatures capable of otherwise suffering'.

Accordingly, there is no absolute morality, religion is neither the source nor the arbiter of morality, and each of us must constantly assess our actions against their effects on others.

Now I'll throw it open to the class for discussion...
@newjaninev2

Seems like a reasonable definition of morality. It fits with what i was thinking when i wrote the question.
I was referring to those moral behaviours which seem pretty universal across human culture
MissMoon · 26-30, F
Without knowing for sure whether or not God exists, we cannot answer that question 🤷
@MissMoon

true enough
It is our definition of God that provokes 'conflict' with that 'relationship' between God and humankind. If we considerGod as 'mind, power and order', it is possible to establish that reflection within our own beings.

@EugenieLaBorgia You're so smart. Attractive
@SW-User Ohh, I thought that was the robot speaking to me, then! Fortunately, it's you - whom I like a lot!!
@Lovelyelaine101

Do you feel god is necessary to account for these morals?
SW-User
Of course that user will ask this question. Moving on
@SW-User

You're not? Because look: one reply in and you're already making excuses to flee the conversation.
There's nothing to be afraid of, dear.

Let's just discuss the topic. Or if you have no interest in discussing the topic, one must wonder why you felt the need to enter the thread in the first place.

Sorry, no idea to which reply or post you're referring. If you want to trhow me a link i'd be happy to look at it🙂

@Pikachu I'm not falling for it. It's been twice. You asked for proof, I gave it, you ghost. It's your own post, find them yourself.

I just don't deal with users like you. There is no benefit.

It's not being afraid, it's being mindful of who I can actually gain knowledge with while debating. You're not one of them.
@SW-User

Sorry dude, i get a lot of posts. I can't keep track of all of them. I recognize your username but i have literally no idea what conversation you're referring to.
Me missing your post was a sore spot for you, not me. Like i said, i'd be happy to take a look at it if you tell me where it is. If you can't be bothered then why should i?
I'm trying to move this in a direction where we can have a conversation.
You seem more interested in posturing.

So i'll just ask once more. Would you like to discuss the topic? Perhaps debate the necessity of god to explain moral behaviour, the possible evolutionary origins?

Up to you🙂
God provided guidance

Man formed that guidance into rules

Humans like rules

Thus, there are morals

Following morals, are the choice of individuals

Civil societies have those morals and voluntarily follow them.

Neither.
Your morality is dependent on your own actions.
@Picklebobble2

Wouldn't you agree that there are several moral behaviours which seem to be fairly universal across human culture?
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Pikachu perhaps. But i still say our morals are....flexible depending on where we are in life; what we have and where we want to be.
@Picklebobble2

Our morals can be flexible. Although think it would be more accurate to say that our willingness to compromise said morals is what becomes flexible depending on our circumstances.
MURD3RM0NK3Y · 26-30, M
Mostly from god but humans have made up a lot of their own morals
@MURD3RM0NK3Y

But could the basic elements of morality for which people traditionally credit god not be easily explained from an evolutionary standpoint?
Eg> don't murder, don't steal, don't lie etc
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
god is what you use to turn evil morals good. pope urban II and hitler both caused many deaths for there own causes but one is called a holy crusade and the other is the holocaust.

at least weve only had one holocaust, c'mon neo-nazi's u got some catchin up to do
