I think of the latinos as Latin speakers of the americas. Europe is separate.

No, they’re not. They’re white people, the ones who in the past invaded the land , and massacred the indigenous people of the Americas.

As far as I know it is only used for people living in Latin America.

My understanding was that it was a term for the Americas only, including the Caribbean.

Latino comes from a shorting of the Spanish latinoamerico to refer to the settlers of the southern Americans by speakers of the Latin romance languages such as Spanish and Portuguese.
Hispanic would be the more appropriate term for south Europeans in reference to the location, language or culture of Spain.
