Do south europeans count as latino or is that something just reserved for south americans?

I think of the latinos as Latin speakers of the americas. Europe is separate.
@Muthafukajones Who speaks Latin ? 🤔
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
@bijouxbroussard latin has descendant languages but no native speakers although it is still used in certain circles
Bowenw · 61-69, M
As far as I know it is only used for people living in Latin America.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I have never heard of Southern European people being called "Latino".

"Latinate" perhaps, and Latin is a major precursor to some of the modern European languages.

The word "latino" though is usually reserved for the descendants of European, especially Spanish and Portuguese, colonists on the S. American continent. The name "America" is itself of Iberian root.
It's not my fight. I'm staying out of it. 🫣

I believe Latinos only come from Latin America

Germans aren’t Latinos for sure.

No, they’re not. They’re white people, the ones who in the past invaded the land , and massacred the indigenous people of the Americas.
My understanding was that it was a term for the Americas only, including the Caribbean.

Just from Mexico south….not sure if Spaniards are Latino. Doesn’t seem like it.

Latino comes from a shorting of the Spanish latinoamerico to refer to the settlers of the southern Americans by speakers of the Latin romance languages such as Spanish and Portuguese.
Hispanic would be the more appropriate term for south Europeans in reference to the location, language or culture of Spain.
