We are created to procreate but we are advanced enough in our societies that its not manditory.
For men or women not believing friendship is possible, that comes down to thier influences and wisdom.
The media has a huge influence on how we structure our lives, our peers reenforce that. The wise see passed that. Less drawn to physical desire and have a more logical understanding of people.

If you cannot be a friend with another human, male or female, you are to be pitied. One can ignore or manage one's carnal desires.
If you feel this inability to befriend a woman based on some religious view - it is a religion that negates half of our species in this way that negates the intricasies of creation, in my view.
Such a belief system does not ring "true" to me for it breeds divisiveness, hierarchical classes for control, and impedes compassion.
