Xanax and Pain

Is Xanax .5 a high dose? My mother is 84 years old and that is the dose she is taking, .5 We had heard that .25 and .5 is not a low dose for the elderly, it is safe for them to take. Last week she saw a new doctor for the first time, he told her that .5 xanax is a high dose and that he will continue to give it to her but she is not sure how many tablets he is going to give her. Mom is very depressed! She told me this morning that its not selfish when a person think certain ways.

When I am old I don't want them to worry about my liver or other things you worry about in younger people. I would just want quality of life. I would rather have a few good years than a lot of bad years.

I heard that Xanax can be addictive but my question to that what is how is other antidepressants better. I hate all the antidepressants because I hear bad information about all of it. We have a friend who used to take Prozac a few years ago. The last time she took it, it made her sick to the point that her husband became concern and told her that she was getting off it. Since then did not touch that medicine again. She is taking something else now and I hate that too because she is still dealing with anxiety. This person was over 60 then, she is now over 70 years old.

My point is I do have not heard any medication that will work without giving some side effect similar to Xanax. In fact there was a lady I spoke to who claimed that the antidepressant she was taking (it was not Xanax it the first letter started with the 'c'); she was in her late thirties at the time, she was upset because it caused problems with her kidneys. another lady who was pregnant could not take any antidepressants until she had her baby because the medicine would had cause problems for the baby. Another lady, who drives a cab had told us one day that she almost got into a car wreck because of the antidepressants she was taking. The passenger had to call for help because they were scared and seen that the driver had slumped over in the seat; she was a young woman and a single parent. So if Xanax is so bad why are doctors making it seem that Xanax is the worse thing on the planet?

Doomflower I am not arguing with you I am repeating stories about other antidepressants. My mother had been very depressed about conflicting information on Xanax. She had been told that its bad stuff to take then she was told that its the best med for elderly also I do not understand that she was told to continue Xanax along with another antidepressant and they still want to prescribe it. The new doctor my mom has now told her that he would prescribe it but he doesn't want to give her a large dose because its bad for elderly, it's addictive. She said that all she take is .5 and do not want any higher than that. The doctor my mom used to have had once gave her a dose higher than .5; that doctor gave mom a dose of 1 (a dose higher than .5). When that happened mom was not happy because that dose was too strong for her. Mom has a long allergy list and she not a big fan of taking any medication, believe me when I say that my mom wish that she did not have to take any medication but its not so simple getting off of Xanax but she is taking the dose that most doctors use when weening a person off of it; she had been taking .5 for a few years now.

In 2010 my mom was diagnosed with luekemia. The diagnoses depressed mom a lot. The doctor was the one who raised the dose to .5 (she used to take .25 when needed). She do not want to want go beyond .5.

Sorry my post is long. :)

.5 is not a high dose.
Some patients can receive far higher doses (by comparison).

Although it's recommended that patients taking Xanax do so combined with therapy.
The idea being to keep the patients reliance on medication to a minimum and so easily weaning them off it.

There are concerns that higher dosages for the elderly can cause more harm than good, this is because extensive use of Benzodiazapines have an effect on the Liver that can cause severe problems especially in the elderly.

Xanax is very addictive.
Old people are at higher risk for toxic build up. Their bodies don't clear the drug as quickly as when they were younger.
