How can we ever hope to be able to stop violence in the general population, when we can't even stop people from hitting their kids?

if we can't stop these minor offenses against people who can't defend themselves, how can we prevent any major ones?

All it does is teach kids it's ok to hit someone that doesn't do what they say and when the kid isn't big or strong enough to hit someone ,you get a school shooter.

@Kodiak I'm sorry to hear about your real and abusive experiences in foster care. I used the word 'alleged' in reference to your implication that any physical discipline as a child inevitably produces an abusive or murderous adult. You say that's 'all it does'; but my equally real experience refutes that scattershot generalization.

Have you grown up to be a violent, abusive, maybe murderous person? Or is that the consequence for everyone except, mysteriously, yourself - despite all your childhood beatings?

"All generalizations are false - including this one" 😄

@kodiacI'm sorry that your 'point' is not open to qualification or unbiased discussion with others. Not much 'point' in posting it then? That's just preaching.

@kodiac You equate discussion with debate? I do not. Discussion is rational, curious, truth-seeking and involves thoughtful give & take. Debate is, at best ,entertainment; has little or nothing to do with seeking truth. In debate one chooses to verbally support either one of two mutually exclusive ideas or points of view, against an opponent defending its opposite. The object is to 'win' by force of superior rhetoric; basically shouting the other down. There's a lot of it goes on here and it's stultifying.

@Really So many big words , the old saying baffle them with bullshit certainly applies here . All without answering my simple question .
