i feel like there are two sides to your question. one is the literal one, which is what is the chain of events that led to human beings appearing on the earth. the other is, since we are self-aware to a higher extent than other living beings, are we supposed to use that for a specific purpose other than survival. this "supposed" word implies design, and even if we were designed, we were designed in a way that can't be discovered by using the tools that we have been provided with. it's a riddle with no answer. you can choose what you want to do with this self-awareness and ability to have thoughts. i have chosen to follow my curiosity.

From the scientific point of view it was some pretty smart living organisms that either came from space or sprung up spontaneously here on Earth and evolved. Oh that's just a matter of chance the right conditions - science can't tell you how organisms became thinking creatures. What about the animals, insects?

God embedded it in the genetic code of all his living creations - even insects think we call it instinct.
