Housing should be a human right

Public housing in form of large panel system-buildings would be a good way to combat homelessness and the housing crisis.

Good quality housing should be a human right.

Those kinds of blocks in the UK are often very hard to heat and suffer from damp/mould as a result, it's horrible having crap housing even if it is a roof over your head.

Having seen the way Greenfell tower burned I'd really not want to live in any UK tower block.

@AntisocialTroll We have a problem with overheating on the other hand. And the air is always too dry. Then there are gas pipes and a threat it all could be blown up and away if some major accident happened.

@AntisocialTroll If quality housing were given, wouldn't the chavs just end up destroying them anyways?
Gloomy · F
@CestManan Classist much? Also the term chavs originated in the Romani language and simply means child.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@CestManan It's been known to happen.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Gloomy @CrazyMusicLover I always thought chav meant - council housed and violent.
or maybe council housing associated vermin.
Gloomy · F
@CestManan It is a derogatory term for young lower class people and it is and was initially used as an anti gypsyi slang so being Romani I think it's a terrible term to use and it is terrible to look down on and categorise people based on social class and the environment they live in.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Gloomy If they look and act like criminals though, are people suppose to look up to them?
Would you want them around your family?
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@CestManan I'd just like to know what's the thought process behind taking the blocks apart to make money from metal rods holding panels together and then building slum sheds out of corrugated sheets and heat with wood that once was probably furniture... 😐
Gloomy · F
@CestManan Who are "them"? You generalise and even in the cases of young people "acting like criminals" there are also reasons for this if you care to look up sociological studies on this.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Gloomy "Them" being the chavs.

I do not care why some people act like criminals, I just do not want to be around it or have to deal with it.
Gloomy · F
@CestManan So you keep using the term "chavs"?

You are such a classist person why would you not care to make the overall situation better? You just rather keep segregating people?
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
@CestManan I'm probably what you think of as a "chav" I'm housed by the council in the worst street on one of the absolute worst estates in my country, my estate is full of junkies and alcoholics, rife with antisocial behaviour etc.

The real reason my estate is as it is is not because of the people, it is because the quality of the housing, it is so very poor it's not possible to sleep through other people moving around at night going to the loo etc, even if you use white noise machines and earplugs as well, the sound levels you can hear from other flats is obscene because of that people become junkies either illegally or via the Dr just so it's possible to sleep through a neighbour taking a p!ss at night.

I'm disabled and unable to work so I've become what you call a "chav" through no fault of mine. What do you suggest someone like me is supposed to do? I'm already on the verge of topping myself because my personal housing situation is so freaking terrible and I'm unable to get out because now I'm a "chav" and can't afford it.

You tell me where exactly a "chav" like myself who is disabled is supposed to live in your world!? Why do you consider me beneath you? Why shouldn't someone like me live near you?
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@AntisocialTroll I read that chav means something like a young delinquent in English. But I really think it means something like a child or a boy in Romani, therefore a Romani underage kid involved in criminal activity. It has a racist undertone. Chavale/chavore are children in Romani.

When I was a kid, chavo meant something like Chad in English or molodetz in Russian. A guy who has swag or momentarily accomplished something. At the time I didn't know the origin of the word. I wonder if kids still use it nowadays.

@CestManan Except if they are white collar well-dressed criminals?
@AntisocialTroll I definitely agree that conditions such as you describe shouldn't be foisted on anyone, even if they can't afford decent housing. We need to establish better standards as to what qualifies as bare minimum housing for humans.
