"My brother's the best chef in New York" says just about every New York taxi driver I've seen on travel programmes. I'm afraid that this is representative of Western culture, especially in densely populated areas - if you don't big yourself up, you will sink the the bottom. In respect of the dynamic between men and women, men who are quiet and reserved are frequently seen by women as weak, uninteresting losers and therefore quickly placed in the 'friend zone'.
