Earlier I read an article about LUCA, the single tiny organism from which all life on earth has come to be... an organism thought to have evolved shortly after the Earth formed.
Curious as to what the comments on the article had to say, I found the following as the second comment (with many upvotes).
I'm not easily surprised by the depth of ignorance and stupidity found among my countrymen, but this one... yeah, how in the he!! does this nut case connect the idea of reparations with an article on how life developed billions of years ago?
Worse yet, others were agreeing with him.
We are doomed.

I’ve posted this before but it’s becoming more and more relevant every day. Very scary indeed. Intelligence being overrun by ignorance. Fact being overrun by fiction. Common sense being overrun by the absurd.
A) I don't believe there's any amount of money that could undo what's been done. B) I don't think it's right to make current generations foot the bill, for what our ancestors did.
It also irks me that it's socially acceptable to be a misandrist, but not a misogynist. Should white males get reparations in a couple generations as well, to console them for the current social climate?
If anything, as a society we should be focusing on holding everyone accountable, if they delve into behaviors that divide our society based on race, social status, or sex. We can start there, plain and simple. That should be how we honor the unnecessary deaths of our ancestors. By uniting, not creating more bad blood or division. If you want people to heal, give them security and comfort. Teach people forgiveness and gratitude. Nurture trust and appreciation. Giving a bunch of people money for trauma their ancestors endured sounds more like a consolation prize, than enacting lasting change in honor of those people.
Before we can conquer the cerebral problems, we should focus more on objective problems, like housing everyone. That's a very simple problem, with a simple solution. I'm not trying to minimize anybody's trauma, but I personally would sleep better at night knowing everyone had somewhere to sleep at night.
In any case, whether you're a Doomer or an Optimist, you're right. You'll find echo chambers that validate you. Personally, I'd rather be an optimist, even if I don't believe hope is a virtue.
