Find something that makes you more valuable than the average worker bee. Sometimes this can be training but it can also be a business idea. Then you have to work really hard for a while. Meanwhile watch what you spend and always try to save a bit.

A college degree no longer guarantees you'll make a decent living anymore

Get a skill. Atend a technical college. Perhaps open your own business..

Multiple jobs, a supportive family, nepotism, or sheer luck.

😚@HalfCactus: - Good enough for single people, but a single parent needs time with the children.... Work smarter, not harder or longer!
The advice farther above: Attend a college & train for business or whatever is your passion; then with the training go for a business loan and start up with a couple of trustworthy people who can spell you off when sick days come or you just need a 'mental health' day.
On a personal note: I have financed (not large sums) my nephews on their ventures BUT I had the business agreements to back up the loans so if things do go 'sideways' I would have protection & first grabs at a bankruptcy (just like the banks do). This way I could offer them loans at a lower interest rate and at more flexible terms for repayment. Question: Do you have a rich uncle??

most of the trades don't require a college degree - plumbers, electricians, HVAC, etc... all make good money, some in the 6 figures
Don't spend beyond your means. And do a lot of home cooking, sewing, and such. There is a lot we can do with out and still have a rewarding life. Plus as you gain life experiences and skills, you can name your on price in a market you understand. I was very successful with no degree and children. I never said no to a job. And negotiated childcare.

I would tell you but most wouldn't like it.
