Does veganism actually save animals?

Animal farming is such a huge large scale industry
Do a few vegans even cause a dent in that process?
If the vegan doesn't eat it, the meat eater will, right? Won't it die anyway?

When you want 1500 lbs of protein rich food you can kill and slaughter a steer. Or you can plow up two acres of land, destroying the habitat of millions of little creatures and killing most of them and grow soybeans. Then when you harvest the soybeans, you kill a few hundred thousand other little bugs and little creatures.
