Yes. Back when I was a kid, my other would occasionally exclaim, "I was quite nonplussed," about some situation that struck her as odd, unexpected and confusing.
My father insisted on "looking glass" for mirror, and "scent" for perfume. He was born in 1902.
These are tiny examples of how language changes over time.
