Have you ever heard someone use the term "nonplussed" in a conversation?

[c=800000]"She would be nonplussed by the very suggestion." [/c]
😳
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I believe I have only seen that word in print.
ProfessorPlum77 · 70-79, MVIP
@DrWatson I agree with you.
Piper · 61-69, F
No, not that I recall. I can think of many times, though, when it would have the about the most perfect word to use in a conservation...to describe how I felt about something.
ProfessorPlum77 · 70-79, MVIP
@Piper Interesting.
originnone · 61-69, M
Yes....someone used "obtuse" in a response to me today. I loved it!

@ProfessorPlum77 ...Wow...you remember high school geometry too!
ProfessorPlum77 · 70-79, MVIP
@originnone @originnone I did not learn much in my geometry class. That same year, the girls from the area junior high schools started attending the centralized senior high in my town. I called them the "farm girls." They were a lot more worldly-wise then the local, girls. My hormones kicked in that year, and I had a rough year, academically.

@ProfessorPlum77 I had three years of advanced math and got a physics degree, and I STILL don't think I could get better than a C in high school geometry....

the late bea arthur used it in an interview in 2003 on british tv.

@ravenhill Maude?
ProfessorPlum77 · 70-79, MVIP
@ravenhill Interesting.
Yes. Back when I was a kid, my other would occasionally exclaim, "I was quite nonplussed," about some situation that struck her as odd, unexpected and confusing.
My father insisted on "looking glass" for mirror, and "scent" for perfume. He was born in 1902.
These are tiny examples of how language changes over time.
Yes, in fact. Math class of all places.
@ProfessorPlum77 As in, "I'm nonplussed about BEDMAS, and our ongoing work with integer numbers"

@SethGreene531 That looks like a "The Far Side" cartoon.
@ProfessorPlum77 The very same. One of my favorites, appealing to a narrow demographic of dry humor and sardonic wit.
I have. It should mean "negative."
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
No I haven’t.
ProfessorPlum77 · 70-79, MVIP
@cherokeepatti Me. either.
