I Was Catfished

It’s crazy, I just wasted 13 weeks of my life on a catfish. For those who don’t know a catfish is someone who lies about who they are in order to entertain themselves. . . most of the time, they have no idea that they are really hurting someone.

My friend Sunny posted something today. . . "Be Forgiving. Be Understanding .But do not be a fool."
I am falling for this guy, but I think he is just using me for internet companionship. I caught him in several lies. He finally confessed to them, but now he tells me that he can be himself with me. I was never going to judge him, but all I wanted was honesty. I like him, but I am not sure if that is just the version of him in my head or if it's really him. I feel like a fool since he lied to me and for months I believed it. I feel it's hard to trust him after this. . . I am not sure what is true or lies.
What should I do?

Hi Rebekah... you should put him in the category of strictly an "Internet friend" and do whatever you have to so you don't change that category for him. In other words, if we maintain context, then "Internet friendships" can be rewarding, somewhat fulfilling (in context), but never real. You don't (and probably shouldn't) need to tell him you have put him into a category, but remember that category keeps you in the power position so you don't fall into any emotional or mind-game traps. That way, you can have fun, put in and extract what you want from the friendship, but you can avoid any hurt. Basically, it sets and holds expectations. And, don't give up on the real-world!

That's why I don't get close to people online. I don't share location, family etc.. I'm here for a good time and meet friends I will most likely never see. The heartache isn't worth it.

I think we need a lot more info before we can answer your question. What exactly were the lies he told you ?

He lied about his age and location. . . family issues and I am not sure why?
