Viola Liuzzo (April 11, 1925- March 25, 1965)

Amazing that she would be 99 years old now. A homemaker from Detroit, she was watching the southern marches and protests on tv and decided to get involved. The Klan murdered her while she was providing transportation to register black voters. She was 39 years old.

I wonder people how many people like her there are, people who risked their livelihoods and very lives by standing up for others...fighting against what they knew was wrong...that few will ever know about. People of all skin shades and religions.

I'd never heard of this woman who was murdered, who died so young for doing what she knew was right. I'm glad to know of her, and her name.

Thank you for sharing and keeping her memory alive just a bit longer. 🫂

I confess that I had never heard about her.

Every time I see you post about the Civil Rights movement, I cringe as I think about how some members of SW conclude that you are somehow being racist for doing so.

She was right: this is everybody's fight.
@DrWatson That’s part of their bias, sadly. The divisions still exist in our country partially because people are being allowed to forget what happened, as well as the fact that all kinds of people participated in trying to improve things. Ironically, in states like Florida, wanting to spare white kids’ feelings by not discussing "the bad old days”, stories like Mrs. Liuzzo’s and other heroes get left out, too. 😞

I remember her name very well..That event - as well as the marches and voter registration campaigns of the time - received considerable coverage here in Australia back then.

Thx for sharing - Not everybody is bad 🤗
@fun4us2b A lot of good people stepped up. Some paid the ultimate price, and shouldn’t be forgotten. 😞

@bijouxbroussard I agree, it is always so inspiring.
