Black teenager, Ralph Yarl, was shot and seriously wounded for ringing the wrong doorbell

The attacker was white, and has been released without charge.

So, SWers, what did he do to deserve this?

I have to say the people defending the shooter here blew my mind. The best case defense I've seen is maybe he had dementia or was off his meds. I'm sorry, but if you have dementia or require medication to not shoot people out of paranoia you should not have a gun. I'm generally pro 2nd amendment, but this is yelling fire in a crowded room type of situation. People wanting to blame mental health instead of firearms need to be doing something about that mental health problem.

And if you may be a danger to yourself or others you should either be in a hospital or in a prison, depending on circumstance.
@ViciDraco That "defense" was the best gun control argument there is. Nobody suffering from dementia should have access to a deadly weapon.

@ViciDraco The other thing you have to remember about people "defending" the shooter is that there is undoubtedly a racial element as well. If the shooter was Black, he's guilty and should hang. But he's White (and old) therefore surely there must be a logical reason for his actions...surely....please....?

@SW-User I am definitely aware of the racial bias at play here.

I did not call race out because I was speaking prescriptively and believe the law should be applied evenly to all.

That's another barrier to break through. Though calling out racism up front tends to set people on the defensive and they stop listening to the whole argument. It doesn't feel good to dance around calling it what it is, but the r word is so emotionally charged that people automatically shut down.
