I thought the great thing now was to encourage more people to have kids - pronatalism - isn't that the big thing now?
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
@AngelaR80 it is in Russia
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@AngelaR80 I think pronatalism severely backfires unless there are policies in place to make sure the right people have incentive to breed, and the wrong people are prevented from reproducing at all.
TheHammer · M
Then since you suffer from anxiety and depression which are mental conditions, you would also be sterilized.
So yes. I agree!

The average vasectomy in the US is around 500 dollars. You should be able to swing that.

@TheHammer You're probably the oddest kink on here; being into the reproductive health of other men. It's a weird look.

Certain people.
Insufferable rich people will populate the world
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@EldritchFox They already own the world, and if anything they want to depopulate it.
@GeistInTheMachine Nah, I think they're outlawing abortions because they need slaves. Look at history.
Ontheroad · M
I see where you are going and it has some merit, but who would volunteer? I think so few would that the cost of the program would exceed any benefit.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@sarabee1995 Nah. I am all for sterilization.
Ontheroad · M
@GeistInTheMachine this sounds like an idea that smacks of forced sterilization and yeah, no.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@Ontheroad You don't think there are any scenarios where even forced sterilization could be warranted? For example, pedophiles and rapists?
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
Certain individuals should be offered about 10k each to be sterilized. Now THAT would be a good long term investment .
I would support it as long as it is voluntary.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@InterdimensionalSideEye I think most sterilizations should be voluntary, but I think a case could be made for forced sterilization for pedophiles and violent sex offenders.
I have even dabbled with the idea that we should all be sterilised at birth in some reversible way. That way there wouldn’t be that many unwanted children no?
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@InterdimensionalSideEye Ideally I think this would be great, but I think if society were that proactive, it wouldn't have so many severe problems in the first place.
ninalanyon · 70-79, T
How do ensure that it really is voluntary?
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
@ninalanyon removing crazy or violent people’s bloodline from society has been practiced by every society since the beginning. Whole families would be killed bc “sins of the father “. This was standard operating procedure from day 1. Kept people in line and benefited society too.
ninalanyon · 70-79, T
@AthrillatheHunt I'm willing to believe that people believe that it has some beneficial effect. But do you have any evidence?
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
@ninalanyon none that I’m willing to spend time researching
BlueVeins · 26-30
No. First of all, income changes over the course of a person's lifespan. Doing permanent sterilization based on that would be silly.
Second of all, birthrates are already going down at an unsustainable pace. This would worsen that.
Third of all, let's say this is needed and it does work. Social safety nets have a tendency to decay in capitalist societies, and the only thing that really stops it is societal upset. If you have a system like this where poor people can sell their fertility, you may end up reducing that social upset without actually strengthening the social safety net. Essentially it becomes an expectation that you'll sell your fertility just to survive if you're up shit river.
IDK if I'm articulating this well, it's a bit of an abstract problem. You'd be infinitely better off just taking the money and investing it into social support programs.

I wouldn’t be surprised if bill gates did just that w all his money after his death : have his foundation pay people to be sterile
familyfunguy · M
Require sterilization if the individual needs welfare assistance beyond X amount of time.
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
@familyfunguy what if they have kids when they are still kids ? I think sterilization would be required before any govt assistance is given.
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
No, we need a tech bro ectomy.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
"... for people who meet certain criteria that indicate they would be poor parents (low income, addiction, severe mental health diagnosis, history of violence or felonies, etc)"
Wait ... Low income is an indicator that someone would be a poor parent???
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@sarabee1995 Of course.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@BlueVeins echos my sentiment I think... pretty much but I would add that I don't think voluntary sterilization is a bad thing after all... individual choice.
supersnipe · 61-69, M
Why wouldn't I be in favour of this? To anyone for whom the second world war was even recent history, never mind lived experience, it's creepy. It's eugenics. It's labelling people as greater or lesser or nothing at all. If that's what's going to happen, it'll be a sad end to my life because I thought all that stuff had been confined to the history books.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@supersnipe A lot worse from that era is already happening now. Soft eugenics always had positive potential, the issue is in how it's applied and to what extent.

@GeistInTheMachine I suggest white collar crime (banking fraud, insider trading, corrupt political dealing etc) has lifted more money from more people than any other. Even the top organised crime bosses work out of plush offices and appear to be 'respectable'. The whole Epstein scandal is about rich white men exploiting poor young women. I'm not saying there's not crime and violence in poor places, but to suggest that because you are not 'respectable' and a criminal you should be steralised is grossly unjust and very simplistic.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@GeistInTheMachine Then work on poverty and addiction!
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@sarabee1995 Not going to happen.
