I assume that the idea started as a form of population control. Through most of human history, we've faced scarcity, so overpopulation in a region was a huge problem. Like everything, an idea that started for a practical reason evolved into dogma.

@DunningKruger Surely for most of human history humans were relatively few in number compared to the number of animals and fruits available to eat. So in those days there was no need to limit population. If food became scarce in one place you could just move to another.
But when you have agriculture and the beginnings of technology combined with a population that is no longer nomadic, then population growth begins to be relevant.
But that's only about ten thousand years ago, a small fraction of the three hundred thousand years of human history
