Where do you live ?

WestonT · 18-21, M
I'm Hispanic/Latino too. I've never been ashamed of it, maybe because I live in a part of the U.S. that's majority Hispanic, so I've always been surrounded by a community of people who have this in common with me, even if we don't all have the same background or all speak Spanish at the same level (I definitely don't speak it well lol). But I love my parents' culture and I've been trying to learn more about it. I've loved going to Mexico and seeing where my dad grew up, and I want to see more of Argentina, where my grandparents are from.

Life is much easier if you like who you are.
Gabber · 22-25, F
@WestonT Thank you ❤
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
I used to be kinda embarrassed that I didn't feel Hispanic enough 😶 my family is Chicano & I know a lot of Spanish but I never spoke it fluently. My great grandmas & grandpas speak no english at all so I always felt like a fake Mexican or something. But I grew up/live in a place where most of the population is Mexican or at least part.
Maybe the political nature or population of the area we live in has a lot to do with it too.

Embrace yourself & be proud. It's a beautiful thing
HoeBag · 46-50, F
@ChiefJustWalks If you decide to improve your Spanish, there is plenty of practice opportunities available. I am a huge advocate for language learning.
As I am learning French, opportunities to speak it are a bit harder to come by. Not as many francophones.
I kind of want to learn some Spanish, maybe the very basics at least. Reading and writing it is not TOO much different than French, but the speaking sounds very different.

Sorry, I get started about language and being the nerd I am... 😄

I used to be kinda embarrassed that I didn't feel Hispanic enough

Well chief, I mean this in a good way but you are just about as Hispanic as they come. 🙂
Girl, relatable. It's sad. Life's too short, live with your own unique expression even if it's a hybrid of two cultures or an appreciation of one. It's you and that's all that matters.
Gabber · 22-25, F
@HijabaDabbaDoo Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. I hope you’re doing well ❤
Infamous607 · 51-55, M
I can understand that after growing up getting the message of ..you're not good enough..enough times...as a group....people eventually start internalizing it. I can see how they might feel shame twice..one for being part of that group...and second. .. shame towards themselves for feeling ashamed.

The word "accept" feels weird. Like there's something that needs to be accepted. Like having a wart or something. But I don't have a better word.
HoeBag · 46-50, F
@Infamous607 "Accept" in a social context is synonymous to "Embrace".

BTW, society in general wants us ALL to feel like we are not "good enough". Like we should be ashamed of whatever.

Have you noticed though that the true 4ssholes and bad guys of the world never feel ashamed and somehow rise to the top? Shame does nothing more than hold us back.

I'm so sorry you ever felt that way. I'm ashamed of being white sometimes because of how racist my culture is. You should be proud of who you are and where your family is from. You should be celebrated and diversity in America should be celebrated.
jademonkey19 · 41-45, T
@ScreamingFox I don't know how to put this into words exactly, but you touched on something I've been thinking about a lot lately. Are you actually white, or is the idea of the white "race" a lie made up by white supremacists? Is white culture actually *your* culture, or something that is preying upon you as well? I think this idea of whiteness makes it easier for white supremacists to recruit people AND lay claim to the achievements of cultures that did not see themselves as "white" but rather were organized along cultural lines.

Ethnically, I'm Irish--and that has some meaning to me. There's a culture that came to me from my grandparents through my parents--but this idea of "white" seems toxic and insane--almost by definition it isn't a culture or a people or a shared experience, it's a power grab...and I think that's exactly why so many "white" people feel an emptiness around culture and community: because their identities have been erased.

@Gabber It's awful you ever felt this way--diversity is beautiful. There are still Americans who believe in the idea of a melting pot, and a place that can be a home for all of us.
Tumbleweed · F
My sister in law is Hispanic. She loved my brother til the day he died. She'll always be family to me.
Infamous607 · 51-55, M
It takes courage to admit that first to yourself and then to others. I've felt that way myself . But it took me longer than it took you to realize it.
Good post.
Gabber · 22-25, F
@Infamous607 Thank you, I’m glad that someone else understands
Infamous607 · 51-55, M
@Gabber
I think thts the norm and not a rarity. How can it not be? The messages are everywhere movies, billboards, TV, internet, how can a kid growing up in the middle of that not be affected.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
It's nothing to be ashamed of, and nothing to be looked at as something you "can't control". That "can't control" makes it sound like there is something wrong with being Hispanic/Latino. There isn't. People who think there is something wrong with it are the ones with a problem and who need to rethink their prejudices.
HoeBag · 46-50, F
Like you mentioned, no one should feel ashamed nor embarrassed on how nature made us. Or about family background, we have no control over either.

"political tension"

This present admin of bigots h4tes us all. Black, brown, white... They pretend to like the straight white folks but if MAGA had it's way, we would ALL be gonners.
Feeling ashamed or afraid of who we are is what THEY want.

So who am I? A white LGBT. The only thing I really judge someone on is - how do people treat me? Normally it is pretty good.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
You deserve to be proud of yourself and who you are
I think you’re awesome 🤗
Gabber · 22-25, F

I'm sorry the US media made you think your heritage was an issue because they don't want to differentiate between immigration and invasion
Gabber · 22-25, F
@SW-User It’s something I’m shaking off still.
Benjago · M
Nothing to be ashamed of at all. Seriously zero. It’s shameful that people and environment could ever foster anyone to feel such a way.
Gabber · 22-25, F
@Benjago It’s something I’m shaking off
Benjago · M
@Gabber Hopeful for you. You’ll get through it.
faery · F
Society is a beast, esp the US lately. The most meaningful protest is to love yourself out loud, imo

You should be proud of who you are. God doesn't make mistakes!
I think some of the greatest goddesses of our time are Latinas.
Ducky · 31-35, F
To hell with who or what ever made you feel ashamed of who you are. You come from a rich and vibrant background. Be proud. 🤗
I went through something very similar as a black person, especially in school. 😔
Gabber · 22-25, F
@bijouxbroussard Aw :( I hope you’re loving your culture and who you are, you’re very sweet :)
@Gabber Thank you. It was a growing process, but I’m happy being me. 👩🏽‍🦳
