Why humans are intelligent but use their freewill to be a special needs case? People are sick of being smart or something?

It does seem like everyone wants to be special needs now, and it especially seems just about everyone has a special needs child nowadays. It's almost like it's the in-thing now. Being autistic has especially become popular. Way different than the past when a special need was the last thing anyone wanted.
