Is sex and gender really different?

I always thought they were the same.
Everything is confusing these days. I'm a dumbass bigot transphobe according to everything.
Im sorry.
The more I try to learn the more confused I feel.
I'm open to everyone's perspective, but the gender spectrum just dosent make sense in my brain...i don't mean to sounds ignorant and hateful it's just.... True.

As far as I understand sex refers to the physical and genetic characteristics that define a person as a male or a female. Back in the day sex and gender used to be synonymous, but nowadays gender is understood as the psychological way a person see themselves, which in majority of people matches their biological sex. There is a minority of people for which gender and sex do not match, those are trans people and they suffer something called gender dysphoria which means their inside and outside image do not match.

Then again, some people go too far ahead in their nonsense and think that intersex people or those who suffer from chromosome anomalies like Turner's or Klinefelter's syndrome are new genders, which isn't true, those are just people who suffer from genetic anomalies.
