Skype is closing on 5th May this year.

I heard yesterday that Microsoft is going to close down Skype on 5th May this year.

My family and I use it for voice chat and occasionally video. Does anyone have any recommendation for a replacement that works on Android, Windows, and Linux? I use Google Chat to talk to some friends who only know me as Nina so I would like to use a different tool to talk to family to minimise the risk of mistakenly calling the wrong person from the wrong account which Skype once did.

the Signal app is great for voice chat; I'm not so sure about video. We use it on android; google says it works on Windows and Linux. It also has a texting feature; its own stream of texts independent of SMS/RCS. The main claim to fame of Signal is end-to-end strong encryption.

@ElwoodBlues It has to have video. Not for me, my camera is always off but my sister frequently wants to show me something.
@ninalanyon I just googled it, and google says the app can do a video call among up to 8 people. I don't think I've ever tried it though.

Ain't they replacing it with Microsoft teams or something? I'm sure they were moving Skype users over to something else...

Don't get me wrong I don't fully know what's going on so that's more of a question than an answer love.

I'd suggest switching to pen and paper. Then you could take your time in how you word things. You can spend countless hours on your message. And the best part is once it's delivered, the others can interrupt you so you get to say all that you want. 😁

It's basic but I'm using WhatsApp and works fine for chats and video or audiocalls

Edit // not sure about Linux though
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@being I think WhatsApp is strange, it wants my phone number. And there is no native Windows or Linux client.
being · 36-40, F
@ninalanyon it does uses phone number, like telegram. So others can find you there knowing your number, true

I didn't know Skype was still a thing.

Real phone calls
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@zonavar68 International calls are rather expensive now that the UK is out of the EU. Not as convenient as Skype which includes text chat, video, and screen sharing.

Facebook messenger (facetime)?
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@exchrist Never tried that. Does it do audio, video, and screen sharing? Also my little exposure to Facebook doesn't fill me with confidence that it would work very well, Facebook itself is a user interface disaster.
exchrist · 31-35
@ninalanyon yes both idk about screen sharing, havent needed to; you could definitely take screenshots then send the screen shot by message
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@exchrist Thanks, I'll keep it in mind
MS Teams might ... there us a free version but not sure what it includes

GoogleMeet? One on one calls have no time limit

WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@ninalanyon hope you find something that works
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@WaryWitchWandering Me too. Skype was perfect because it had no time limit and worked perfectly on Windows as a direct replacement for a phone call. None of this ridiculous roundabout business of creating a meeting and sharing a meeting link.
@ninalanyon Try Googling ninalanyon right now.

@ultra zoom was what everyone used in 2020 I’m p sure

Why not just use video calling on your cellphone.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Musicman Sounds expensive, especially from country to country. And something like Skype includes the ability to type text at the same time which is very handy when I'm trying to guide a family member through something or tell them to loot at a web page.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Musicman Skype took up too much space on my hard-drive when I was using it. So I stopped using it a long time ago.
Zoom has become the powerhouse of video conferencing as Skype never really advanced to keep up with technological updates.

@ninalanyon i'm quite sure they can last longer. Maybe initial setup or settings would make a difference.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@froggtongue Not according to the web page. Even Basic Paid accounts are limited to forty minutes.
